This past summer I was near downtown Indianapolis taking pictures at night and a guy walked up to me and asked if I wanted to buy his camera, he wanted to sell me a 50D with a 70-200 f4 for $250. He said it was way over his head and he didn't know how to use it. I asked a few questions and he couldn't answer any of them...where he bought it (walmart), how much he paid ($450). Then I commented that the lens must be cheap because it's white and he said that's why he's only asking $250.

I showed my badge, I'm a police officer, and confiscated the camera bag and towed his car. There was another bag with a flash and another lens inside the car. It took three months, but State Farm was able to identify the 70-200 by the serial number and they were able to find the victim. He had already been reimbursed, so the camera gear was picked up by State Farm....but, they guy trying to sell the gear was charged with theft and got a couple years of probation. (criminals don't go to jail in Indianapolis..)

The moral of this story is....well, there isn't one...enjoy your new gear and hopefully your premiums won't take a big hit! I hate theives! vmad

What? probation only? wow!!!

I don't know what's better -- this part, or pulling out the badge!

I really hate thieves.

Just a reminder to contact us, B&H, KEH and any more local resellers of used equipment with the serial numbers?

I don’t know how useful this has been so far, but http://www.iwantmycameraback.com (external link) is a photographic equipment serial number base for stolen / lost items. It enables users to list details about the lost equipment, such as the brand, the model, the serial number and also information about the place, the time of loss and a contact email address.

Photographic supply shops, service centers, prospective buyers and whoever else wishes to, can, by using the search engine provided by this website, search through equipment serial numbers to find out if it has been declared lost or stolen.

Also it's possible to contact the owner who declared the loss, in order for him to be given the necessary information as in how to retrieve the equipment. The website www.iwantmycameraback.com (external link) aspires to become a universal database for lost and stolen equipment and to increase the percentage of retrievals.

In other words, it will no longer be necessary to inform every service center, photographic supply shop or photographer independently in case of loss. They'll be informed through the upload of the information on the website.

In addition, due to the universal nature of this service it will be possible to immediately and directly inform all service centers, photographic supply shops and photographers in all countries.

do you still remember the serial number of all your gear, usually it is printed in your box or warranty card, so if there's something similar, someone will let you know for sure about that

That is GREAT! I will make sure to post all my info there.

Yep I have all my boxes, receipts and serial numbers.
I made a comprehensive list for the detective and I will post it to that website.

On a more positive note I did receive my new 7D and 2 of the lenses today. Just waiting for the rest of the insurance money (renters) to come through and I will build the rest of my kit.

I sure missed having a camera.....and for some reason this 7D and the new Tamron 90 macro seems sharper than the one that was stolen...maybe it is just some kind of placebo effect.

Just because the 7D wasn't on your personal articles policy, it might be covered by a homeowners or renters policy. Did you check that out? Sorry to hear about this.

If you purchased your 7d from a retailer with a credit card, check with your bank/cc company, some have accidental damage/stolen/broken coverage for free. i got an Amex card offer in the mail that had this. Just an idea. Sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately I purchased it from Best Buy on their CC with the 36 months interest free deal. They do not have any coverage that I was able to find.
My renters did cover what was not on my personal articles policy, though there was a $500 deductible. So basically I lost a sigma 50 1.4 (which was pissing me off anyway).

The new stuff is showing up at the door daily, got to love Amazon Prime.

All of my stuff is insured but I've been lazy about it lately - leaving it in the car while I run to get myself dinner at the grocery store or something. Not gonna happen any more. right back to the house from now on, even though I live in a low-crime area, not gonna chance it.

I really like the 7D and don't want to have to spend the cash to get good full frame glass....yet.
I like macro, family stuff and want to get into surf photography so the 7D is good for me.

I just have to share this...I previously had a flashpoint carbon fiber tripod and it was ok I guess. Since I was rebuying everything I decided to look for a better tripod and ballhead. I hunted a lot and found the Induro c414 on Amazon for what seemed like a really good price...like really good...like misprint good....so I bought it. I paid $289.00 for the legs and got a BHD2 ballhead for $197 and they showed up today.
HOLY COW! this is a big tripod!!!!

The thing if beefy and feels rock solid......now I need to buy a step stool or something.
I had the wife take a picture of me standing next to it with her p&s.....to give perspective I am 5'10"

I can't wait to stick the bigmos on top of this sucker!
