Been working on improving my B&W conversions. Tried out some different tips I found online. Working with PSE8. How does this look to you? I know the eyes aren't quite in focus, took this over a year ago, about 6 weeks after I got the camera.

Melody, I'm no B&W expert, but I'd say you did a good job on the eyes, the hair and the lips, so I give it a nice thumbs up!

I think you may have gone a touch too dark. Some of the iris detail has been lost and the eyes are the most important part.

I kind of agree with Hank regarding the eyes, but the rest is just fine. Jill, what conversion method did you use?

I did lighten the eyes up later. Monitor is uncalibrated and I know that stuff is printing a little brighter than what I see.
Made a levels layer, then a saturation layer. Desaturated top layer and used the separate color sliders on the levels layer, flattened. Cleaned up the original a bit before I started.
Easy for me to remember how to do, and it seems to work alright so far.
