I'm adding a 500 BXRi to my D-Lite kit (very happy with by the way). My "studio" is quite small, so nothing too large is going to work. I'm considering either the Rotalux softbox 39x39, or the 39" Mini Octa. This is for general portraiture and some still life type shots. I do also intend to take this modifier to help in some casual location small group shots that I'm involved with, so portability (set-up and break down) is somewhat important. Any advice on the relative versatility and performance between the two is appreciated. Note, I also somewhat considered the EL 41" Varistar umbrella/soft box. I think this may be really good for portability and using with groups of people, but would not work very well back in my small studio because of lack of directional light control. Comments and advice appreciated.

I would choose the Mini Octabox because it has that nice round catchlight- then again that is 't necessary as you'l find plenty of fashion shots with a square catchlight that just looks like a reflection fromma window. For location work either would be great but often for me a shoot through umbrella is just as good or better if I'mmjust using one light because you can use the spill to help create the fill if you work the umbrella close to the face where you'll find a sweet spot that you like. An Elinchrom 41" for me would be ideal.

But I do use Octaboxes a lot, just got the 74" Elinchrom indirect Octabank and excited to start using it on portraits but sometimes taking all of this gear into a persons home can be a bit intimidating and I often prefer a 580EXII shooting through a Westcott umbrella and a bounce reflector for fill and picking a background sometimes withe a window in the distance which I throw out of focus to give the shot some depth. I've wonders about the TriStar 41" myself.
