Do you by "external" mean a separate flash in the hotshoe, or do you mean one or more remote flashes, controlled by the built-in flash from the camera?

Good idea for a thread, though I don't see what AF points could have to do with anything.

Technique and settings depend on where I am and what I'm shooting. Anything from a speedlite on a long ETTL cord to a half dozen strobes being triggered by pocket wizards.

Single flash mounted on the camera hotshoe.

Take a look in the flash and lighting section. Chances are all your questions have already been asked.

If not, it would be easier if you ask a question about a particular situation. Depending upon what to shoot, I use pretty much everything there is, but that's not an answer that helps for any specific case.

Lighten up Francis.

Camera in Manual, ISO 400, 1/250 sec, whatever aperture I want. Defined this as custom shooting mode C3.

Flash pointed at a white ceiling with a white bounce card rubber-banded on the back.

With a single speedlight, I tend to favor Manual with a slow enough shutter speed to let in ambient light, shoot in ETTL with the flash bounced and with the 580EC I extend the bounce/catchlight card. I typically then do a bit of bracketing with the Flash Exposure Compensation because often the Auto setting is too bright for close portrait work.

I like to bounce flash. Direct flash is too harsh

Those two posts remind me of two people I work with.

They both stutter in their speech. When they first met, they wanted to kick each others arse because one thought the other one was making fun of their speech impairment..

I usually just set to M, ISO 200, 1/30-200 depending on lens for taking shots of desktop objects with only one 580EX+gary fong knockoff in ETTL.

Seems he didn't like my reply.

Well, you can't please them all, but I'm still of the opinion that it's the truth.
