I just made the leap into the L series, and the 24-70 2.8 fit what I was looking for. I got it and when I shot at 2.8, I wasn't too impressed with pics. I shot some at f/10 and they blew my mind away (like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tadros/5016145679/ (external link)). The lens has amazing colors but the sharpness wide open is making me wonder. Especially in the corners. Can anyone please look at this and tell me if this is the best I'm supposed to expect?!

the comparison file I made is:

My Brick is extremely sharp at all focal lengths wide open and I am extremely happy with it. This is AFTER I switched to a 5D, it didn't do justice wide open on my old T1i.

yes I'm using a T1i at the moment and waiting for a good deal on a used 5DMkII... Did you download the file and look at the comparison? I just bought it a week ago, should I return it or ship it to Canon? or is that Normal that the corners aren't sharp?

I believe mine is tack sharp.

That test.png doesn't look quite right to me - try microadjusting the lens.

I can't view your comparison but my 24-70 is tack sharp wide open and stopped down. I do seem to recall some reports of soft copies. Do you have the ability to exchange it?

Certain camera have the ability to do a micro adjustment. Find a target take a shot if it doesn't look sharp enough go into the menu for MA this allows you to make small adjustments to bring it into focus. You can either do a minus or plus in increments. So take many shots and try MA at different seeting until you have a nice sharp on target shot.

I can't see your test shots (not Mac friendly) so I'm not sure if this helps, but here's a junk shot with my new 24-70L right out of the box, shot on my 5D2. It's at ISO 3200 so there's some noise, but it's enough to get the idea.

100% crop of the center:

And a 100+ % crop of the in-focus flower in the bottom left corner:

So yeah, you do lose some sharpness in the corners at f2.8 - if this is your first foray into wider-aperture lenses, it's pretty common to have a little softness in the corners at f/2.8.

I just bought it a week ago from beachcamera.com I can call them or I can go through Canon. My camera doesn't do microadjustments, I don't think.

It doesn't. You might want to consider sending both the camera and the lens in to Canon to be adjusted, the 24-70 is wonderful even wide open.

Can you attach one of the soft shots wide open here?

Have you tried any real world shots wide open? The center shots look acceptable to me, looking for sharpness in the corners with a focus chart wide open may be asking a little much.
