I have an EOS 300D, and today while taking some pictures outside it called it quits on me (kind of). I was taking some pictures with high shutter speeds and during one of the pictures the camera seemingly 'locked up'. I waited a few moments, and the camera never finished it's exposure, the mirror never came back down. I shut the camera off with the power switch and that did no good. So I slipped the battery out. When I turned the camera back on, the next pictures started coming out exposed on only one side.

I put the camera into cleaning mode and saw that a mirror, behind the main mirror wasn't going up like it should, obviously causing the sensor to be blocked. I don't know what this part is called, but I have some pictures attached that were taken with my phone.

I'm wondering if anyone may have an idea of what the right terminology is for what's wrong, and what sort of repair costs I might be looking at, or if there's any repair I can do at home.

The one thing I did try, a quick flip of the secondary mirror back up, and it went up okay, but then there was horrible ghosting through the viewfinder and I could not autofocus. I flipped it to manual focus, and for two frames my pictures came out, because the secondary mirror was stuck in the up instead of down position.

Pictures attached, thanks for the advice/hints!

The cause, in cleaning mode:

Broken shutter and mirror assembly, the 300D's main weakness. Costs US $250-300 to repair and takes from two to three weeks to fix.

Yowch, I see used models that are newer than this selling for less, doesn't make much sense to try and fix sounds like... Was at about 25,600 exposures on it, gently used *sniff* Thanks for the feedback DC Fan.

All is not lost. You can trade it in - check out Canon's Loyalty Program...

Still, *sniff*. Know what you mean...

ok - is it the shutter or just the sub mirror pin thingy (technical I know) :D
if it is and you are feeling adventurous (or the cameras heading for the bin) have a look at this...

It's a shutter problem as you can see the sensor/filter in his pic. The sub mirror could be an issue too though.

The 300D is old so at least he has a good reason to upgrade. :)

Have had the desire to upgrade for some time, but could not justify the cost. I'm now concerned my lenses won't do well with a newer body. Thinking about a 60d or perhaps even a 7d. Will be awhile before I can buy new glass. Think my lenses (see sig) will do fine on newer high MP bodies? Except the 50mm 1.4 They were originally purchased for my Elan 7e body. Only reviews and info I can find use them on old digital bodies where they seem to be fine.

The sensoR was visible because I put it in sensor clean mode. Problem looks like what that link describes with the plastic pin. considering seeing if I can do that fix if I don't end up using the customer loyalty program, a good learning experience if nothing else, thanks for that link Davinor!
