I've ordered a few APS-C lens (tamron 17-50 VC and Tokina 11-16), and I'm wondering how serious the vignetting might be on an APS-H (ie 1.3x) body. I'm picking up an 1d2 as a backup body.

I know for a fact that a Tokina 11-16 on a FF body is basically only good at 15-16mm... what kind of effect will I see on an APS-H?

I'm not worried about the lens hitting the mirror--I won't be using any canon EF-S lens--just APS-C-designed 3rd party lens.

Did some digging and found a thread here:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=792330
This OP asked the same question and didn't really get results:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=812089

Minimal information for both--doesn't really answer my question. If anyone would like to chime in I'd appreciate it.

Well, there may not be a whole lot of people who would use AS-C lenses on a 1D body, so it's hard to say how many really descriptive answers you'll get:)!

For now, let's say "some"!!

I have tried the 17-50 on my 1D and the results were not good unless you are wanting a dark edge on your photos that is.

I was well aware that there would be some vignetting on the wide-end... what I'd really like to know is at what point the vignetting disappears :) I'd assume around the 25-30mm mark?

I bought a Sigma 10-20mm as a package deal with a 40D.
It is a lens designed for the APS-C sensor though being an EF lens it can go on the 1D and 1Ds series.

On my 1DIII the Siggy looks pretty nice, the vignetting helps to add to some of my photos style.
Corner sharpess is down though as it wasnt meant for this sensor size.

On a FF body the vignetting is horrible and not something I would even want to worry about. It looks like an odly shaped box and is ugly.

So, you are saying that on the 1D3 it actually looks pretty good? I think that is what the OP is asking.

Could you post shots with this lens out of camera at 10, 15 and 20? That would be a real contribution!

I'll likely have my 1d2 by the end of the week, so if nothing else I'll take some pictures with my Tamron 17-50mm--I'll upload them as well

Finally getting around to uploading the promised images of APS-C Tamron 17-50mm lens on an APS-H (1d2) body. Obviously the vignetting isn't good, but it's croppable. It's still there at 50mm... I honestly though the effect would mostly disappear from 35-50mm. Oh well.

First is at 17mm
Second is 25mm

It's interesting that it's still so pronounced at 35/50 -- a usable crop, but you'd definitely need to be careful with your framing, and I don't think I'd want to go far with it on a full frame:)!

Thanks for posting that!

You're right--it would be rather horrible on a FF. I'll know within a week when my 5d2 arrives :)

Still in a pinch, this type of cropping would be quite manageable

The Tokina 11-16 is actually fine, perfect to 13mm, just a bit of vignetting at 12mm, noticable at 11mm on the 1DII.

If you can snap a few shots, I know more than a few people who would like to see how it turned out. I sold off my 11-16mm specifically because I was worried about vignetting.
