I agree that no one technique works on every image. I do like the sharpening algorithms (like I know what I'm talking about) in ACR in CS5. I also like those in Topaz.
I nearly always prefer selective sharpening.
One technique I like and find I almost always use to begin sharpening, just as a baseline, is to convert to LAB mode, go to Channels, select the Lightness Channel and apply sharpening to it, then step backward to return to RGB mode. Avoids sharpening color artifacts, creating chroma distortions, etc.
I also love edge masks and sharpening, so I'm looking forward to trying your action.
