This waterfall was recently "discovered" in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, near Redding, California. Certainly people had been there before (quite a bit of logging had been done in the area), but it was not "officially" know, meaning that it didn't appear on USGS maps, and even the park rangers didn't know about it. Until, that is, a ranger was cleaning out some old papers, when he came across a very old map that had a mark with "waterfall" written next to it. He hiked out there, and found this 300-foot, three-step waterfall.

This photo is of the lowest step, and I understand the second one is even better. They are working on a trail to the falls, but it's not open yet. That didn't stop me (what big sign with "TRAIL CLOSED" written in foot-high letters?). The ranger I ran into near the falls wasn't too pleased with that, so he gave me a stern, but fair, lecture about "for your own safety." He was a nice guy, though, and said I could continue on to the falls, as long as I didn't climb up to see the rest. Me being an honest guy and all, I did as he asked (this is just oozing with irony, isn't it?).

Anyways, the trail is supposed to open in October (which by the NPS and government time schedule really means next May), and I recommend waiting until then. It is well worth it!

That's beautiful! I wish I had some nice waterfalls like that here. If the others are said to be better, I cant wait to see them!

Nice shot. I heard about this one. Nice to see a pic of it. I'd tone down the brightness on the left just a bit though.

Very nice waterfall, try that shot again but in the early morning, late day, or overcast day.

Thanks for posting. We have visited that area, but were unaware of the falls. That is a great area for scenery.

Beautiful set of falls, and the photo does it justice.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
