Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. I've only replied to people before.

I'm going to Ireland for 8 days at the end of October. I'll be traveling through the south. I'm using this opportunity to possibly by some new glass. If you could only take 2 lens's, what would you take? I am a newb. I only have the lens that came with my T1i and a 50mm right now.

Please keep in mind my budget it not unlimited.

I went to Irland recently with my brother's D700 + 24mm 50mm 85mm. Wich covers a range from 15mm to 55mm on crop. Was perfect to me.

I also went to India 2 months ago with my 7D + 10-20mm 50mm and 200mm...And I missed the 20-50 bad. Real bad. I don't think I'll ever travel again without anything between that range (on crop).

If I was you I'd buy a wide angle (11-16 or 10-20 or 10-22 w/e) and go with your 18-55. I'd also add a 50mm 1.8 for night shots in the irishs pubs (trust me its worth it).

I actually already have the Canon 50mm f1.8. So i guess I have to look into the wide angle and the telephoto.

Thanks for the suggestion

You already have the 18-55mm, plus the 50mm 1.8 so if funds are a bit tight I would say buy a Canon 10-22mm. A longer zoom is great to have, but for traveling, how often would you use it compared to the wide angle landscape lens?

+1 to that. Wide and normal range was just fine. I wouldn't hesitate to do the whole trip with a 17-55.

Sigma and Tamron have good lens in the range from 28-200. These lens can cover most focal lengths for landscapes as well as close up.

Everyone's shooting style is different. For me it's one UWA zoom and one tele prime + 2 bodies.

I just spent 3 weeks in Europe (london, paris, amsterdam, munich, salzburg, cinque terre, rome) with my wife and we both love to shoot. 17-40F4 and 24-70 was all we needed. It would have been nice a few times to have our 70-200 but honestly i'm glad I didnt have that weight with me the whole time. Crumpler 7 million dollar home was also the PERFECT travel bag for our rig.

only change I would have made was leaving the lens hoods for both at home and leaving our 580 flash at home. We just didnt use these items.

I was in Ireland for about a week and a half at that same time (last year). Western side of the country and then Dublin...

I had a 24-70mm, 70-200 IS 2.8, and 35L - on full frame... I would say I used the 24-70 85% of the time, the 35L 14% of the time, and the 70-200 1% of the time. And I think when I used the 70-200 it was to justify the fact that I was carrying the weight around...

If you're on crop and are set on only two, then I would take/rent the 17-55 2.8 and 24mm L. You really want a very fast lens to take shots in the pubs and of interesting people in the cities...

Those two and your T1i are relatively light so you might want to throw in the 10-22mm as well. I managed fine with the 24-70 but there were a couple times I wish I could've went wider.

And really look at forking the dough and renting the "good" lenses... I assume it's most likely a once-in-a-lifetime trip and they will be photo's you'll look back on for the rest of your life...

Here are a few shots I took last year with the 24-70:

Have a great time... You're gonna love it...

very nice pictures. I'm focusing right now on a good wide angle lens. Should I buy a flash?
