golfecho (I will regret that) More info | Jan 08, 2019 10:57 | #384 This is an image of Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral, Florida. This is what remains of John Glenn's launch site for the famous launch of the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. Time and the very close proximity to the Atlantic coast (about 500 yards away) have taken a terrible toll over the years. Most of the original steel I-beams have completely rusted through (these are the red rusty beams seen in the photo). The blue/grey beams are "crutches" that have been installed a few years ago to keep the entire launchpad complex from falling down. The large concrete portion of the structure on the right is where the blast deflector was attached, and the fixed umbillical gantry was located.
