I just sold my trusty 40D a month ago.

Today the buyer told me that nothing is working on the cam!
He replaced the small battery but no change.

When the lid for the CF is open and you close it, there should be a blinking red light for a short while. There is none.
No error codes shows up.

Have anyone experienced this?
Otherwise he will send it to be serviced tomorrow.

Since I don't have seen the camera there is not much else I can tell.
But I guess there is nothing in the display either.

I think I have read something like this before, but I am not able to find it.

So any suggestions are highly appreciated.

There are switches on both the battery door and the CF card door that turn the camera off when the doors are opened. It's possible one of these has failed.

That was the first thing that I asked him :)

Yes, told him to check those also.
So I guess I will hear tomorrow if it worked.

Turns out he used an old CF card.
One of the connection holes were blocked....
One of the pin in the CF dock got bent.
So he will try to bend it back.

So tomorrow he will have to send it in since he will probably break it.

suspect even if he manages to straighten the bent pin, there's likely either a fuse blown, or damage to one of the circuitboards. Either way, it'll be a repair center fix.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

He got a price quota: US$ 850....
I bought this camera new from B&H for 900 something.
So it is very expensive here in Norway
He is not going to repair it!

Well it is not your fault so I hope he didn't demand anything from you.
I hope he learned a lesson not to use old crappy cards though it is amazing that the repair would cost 850 bucks :O
then again Norway is known for outrageously high prices :p I have heard all about it when I used to live not far from the Norwegian border and you guys drove across the border to Sweden to buy "cheap" stuff :p

No, he didn't ask anything from me. He understood that he broke it.
Yeah it is expensive here. On most electronics it's the VAT of 25% that makes the diff.
But everything else is at higher cost. But we have it good here so I can't complain too much.

haha yeah actually you guys seem to be doing whole a lot better since a lot of Swedes have moved to Norway just to find jobs there :D
Do you guys have to pay customs and/or VAT if you buy stuff from EU countries?

Yes we have to pay VAT on everything over NOK 200 (US$33)
We have among the best economy world wide. No debt. We didn't notice the problems other countries have had in the past years. So I guess we can't complain

I also just found this one: http://www.darntoothysam.com …r-Service/EOS-SLR-Series/ (external link)

I like to see these 3rd party repairers who have a nice website, for a number of reasons. It means they're surviving on out-of-warranty work and probably good service. Their opinions about the products are not as biased as the OEM. They list a number of specific repairs aside from the expected cosmetic and cracked LCDs -- like a DC-DC converter repair and a lens contacts replacement on the Xti/400D (my last camera) which points to these issues being somewhat common.

This looks very interesting. I might offer him some money for the camera :)
