i've got a compact digi, and i'm sick of it. i want to upgrade, but i seriously seriously lack money
like 500(AU)..

now, i was looking on the net at the SLR 300x.. but then i relised it's film! (am i right?)

so.. whats the lowest(cheapest) canon SLR that doesn't take film? digital but not 'digital' if you know what i mean

is the 350D the lowest slr i'm after? if so i'm screwed.. i can't afford that lol

so, the 300x, 3000V and 3000N are all film cameras? is that right?

i'm after a camera better than a compact digital, for around 500AU

what about 2nd hand cameras? please reply asap.

Canon EOS 300D, a.k.a. Canon Digital Rebel in the USA.
See http://www.canoneos.com (external link)

The 300x is a film SLR. All digital SLR's have a D in the name.

Canon EOS 300D should be the cheapest actually, perhaps you can find a bargain on ebay... but for 500AU$, I doubt. Then you don't have lenses, memory-cards, then you'll want L .

Stop now, it's still time...

Just kidding, DSLRs are great...

Please explain "digital" versus 'digital'.

$500 AUS ... it's just not going to happen unless you buy one that needs a repair off ebay. The body is often the cheapest part of your investment unless you only stick to a kit lens. A 300D is a great camera but even SH in the UK you are looking at twice your budget with kit lens. You will need CF card/s too ... you could get some more cash selling your current cards.

Yoou could probably get a D60 or D30 with a lens in your price range. Unfortunately, until you get to the $4000 (US) DSLRs, they all take CF cards so your 5 GB of SD cards won't be very much use. I think that some companies make SD-CF adapters, but they're not especially cheap (or common).

Sorry as everyone already said a DSLR for $500 aussie bucks isn't going to happen :(. At the moment if you shop around the 350D can be bought for a good price with the current cash back offers. If you find someone with stock of the 300D you can save $100-$150 roughly, but I would say the 350D is worth the small difference.

I would suggest to save a little longer if you must have a DSLR, or look at what your current issues are with your compact digital and if the is another compact that has the features you need. Going down the SLR path is never cheap and the lenses cost even more. That said I have a 2 megapixel compact that I bought a couple years back and it cost me almost the same as my 350D, it never took the best captures either so hardly got used.

The 350D got more use in 2 weeks than the digicam got in 2 years, so in that respect I think the DSLR is cheaper/better value.

You might consider looking at a used D30, preferrably with lens.

While I don't know how much 500AUD is and if it fits the budget, the D30 is a very capable camera that can deliver great images and should be available now at acceptable prices. 2 years ago when I was looking at getting either this camera or the Kodak DCS 520 (2 MP camera based on the Canon 1V series, similar to 1D except in the MP and FPS department) as a cheap interim solution until getting my 10D/300D/whatever, both were in the 500$-600$ price range used. US-$, that is.

However, bear in mind that this is where the spending really starts. You can get the great 50/1.8 lens to get you started with quality photography, but it'll be a lot of money until you arrive at your dream setup.

Another alternative would be getting a Canon-M42 adapter and using used manual focus lenses ... available on eBay for a song.

Best regards,
Andy

D60 is a inexpensive solution to a DSLR.

I just had a look on Ebay, saw a D30 for auction starting bid was $549 AU and a G5 also starting at $350 AU. So I guess you may get a DSLR or a decent P&S for around your budget if you shop around 2nd hand.

i'll do some research on the D30 and D60, see what ebay has, see what 2nd hand traders have etc..
i highly doubt it, seeing as CF cards alone are $100.

maybe i should just try and find a major upgrade in a PnS camera

Does it have to be canon?
The pentax istds is a camera that takes SD cards and the body is less than $1000
brand new.
It may not be as upspecked as the canons but it would make a great starter digital slr.
Plus you can get a large amount of second hand pentax lenses for less than what you can get canon lenses which in my opinion are way overpriced.
As for me yes I have a canon but my budget was not as restricted.
