24-70 vs 17-55 on 7D

I am going to buy a 7D, but i dont know whitch lens to buy with it.
The 24-70/2.8L USM or 17-55/2.8 IS USM.

Whitch lens would be the best lens on the 7D?

17-55/2.8 IS USM.

The 24mm won't be very wide on a 7D. It'll be like 40mm. If that doesn't bother you I would get the 24-70 for its better build quality. The 17-55 is known to suck in dust. It has no weather sealing. I have no internal dust in my 24-70 so far and it's been through some rainy sandy days.

The image quality between the two are similar, some say the 17-55 is sharper but I can't tell the difference. I suggest 24-70 because you might upgrade to a non-crop later on, but if you have sights on staying crop the 17-55 would be the better choice since I like to have the focal length option at 17 to 24mm.

I had both. I sold the brick. 17-55 is an amazing lens.

17-55. Don't care about the red ring and go for the best EF-S zoom.

I'd go for the brick. Can't stand plastic at that price. It'll be a wise investment if you're planning to go FF someday.

OP, I think you'll find a lot of people who own either lens, will tell you they're happy with their choice.
But there's no clear concensus.

There's a poll on this very same lens selection on another thread, and at times it was as high as 93% in favour of the 17-55.

But it's gone up and down.
I don't know where it's at currently.

I think the best thing to do, is either rent the lenses, or go to your local camera shop and see if they'll let you mount them on your camera and snap some pics in the store, so you can go view them at home, and deliberate.

I know my camera shop would let me do this, no problem.

The quality is great for both lenses. Just pick the one with the focal range YOU like better. Simple.

Then it's the 24-70 then

I played with the 17-55 before I bought my 24-70, just couldn't get over the cheep feel of the lens and the numerous "dust" comments. I'm happy with the 24-70 on my 7D

of course you may not realize the Canon 17-55IS and other EF-S type lens like the Tamron 17-50 are sharper than the 24-70 on a crop model but as long as you're happy that's all that matters

Getting the brick just because it's an L? Some venture that the 1755 is superior to the brick in every way but build quality, and a sliver of red.

I'd personally pocket the $300-400 difference.

17-55. The best all around lens I have owned, period.
