Hi,
I shot a video clip with my new Canon G6, however, when I tried to download it to my laptop, I could only download the photos I had shot earlier. The button to download automatically did not download the video and I was unable to find a way to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use a USB 2.0 hi-speed compact flash card reader to transfer files from the memory card to the PC. The reader appears as a removable drive and the JPG (photo) and AVI (video) files are easily moved from one location to another.

In my opinion, using the Camera to PC connection is one option, but I think a USB 2.0 high speed reader will do the job in much less time. Although the latest high speed CF (like the Sandisk Ultra II and Kingston Elite Pro) cards work great in Digital SLRs, they do not offer speed improvements in the G6. However, they seem to enhance transfer speed in the card reader.

I second the motion. Get a card reader. Then just drag and drop it off the card.

That's the chicken way.
Use the Canon ZoomBrowser EX that comes with the camera. Just select the images or video clips to be downloaded and download them. Where's the problem?

Unfortunately downloaders usually only get the JPGs. The default download supplied with windows XP for example will only download JPGs. Leaves my RAW files on the card. So get a card reader and then if looks like a drive and you should be able to see all the files.

Absolutely. Why get a card reader? Using the Camera with a high speed card and USB port is probably just as fast than a card reader right?

Hi Robert,
I tried exactly that. But I couldnt see any video downloaded using the Canon ZoomBrowser EX. Are there any additional settings necessary to download videos using Canon ZoomBrowser EX?

When you use ZoomBrowser and the Camera window is up, do you see the avi file? If so, you click on it and download it.

Over time, I have seen dozens of posts about uploading through the camera. All of the problems are fixable. Some easier than others. But all are pretty much non issues when usning a card reader. Canon's software is clunky at best. Why suffer the aggrivation?

As a percentage of the amount you have invested in your camera, the cost of a reader is insignificant.

If you have a pre-G5 mac, you need a Firewire reader, which, while not prohibitively expensive, is not nearly as cheap as a USB2 reader, plus I use a few different computers and download to friend's computers on the road, which are often not Macs, and I have 2 cameras that use 2 different cards. So even though USB is slow as all get-out, I prefer to carry that one little white cord with me and be pretty sure it will work anywhere. So information about this is of great use to me, and "get a card reader" is not the only or best answer.

What I've found for Mac users: (hopefully someone might find it useful)
-The newest iPhoto downloads RAW files and movies, no sweat.
-if the newest iPhoto isn't an option on your mac, you can use "Image Capture" which is buried in your Utilities folder.
-the "sound memos" are tricky, iPhoto does not download them, and Image Capture might, but I know at least once I had to use the Canon Software. Do card readers find those?

Bb.

Bryan, the last thing I want to do is get into a boring Mac vs. Windows debate. But since the majority of people use Windows, I agree I didn't think about Mac. Mea culpa.

I also have 2 cams, a G6 and a Sony P150 "belt cam" I wear all the time. My computer at home has card slots and at work I have a multi card reader. I have been known to carry a card reader with me so I can plug it in to a contractor's PC and show them fresh shots I've taken. As long as they have XP, no problem.

I guess I should have prefaced my comments "Unless you are one of the few who use odd-ball stuff (slap my hand. I said I wasn't gonna do that), a card reader is the simplest and easiest solution".

No... it's not the speed of the compact flash card that's the hold up. The G-series cameras have USB 1. Card readers can be USB 2. Doesn't sound like much until you realize that the USB 2 specification is 40 times faster than USB 1.

I used to be a cable guy until I tried a card reader for the first time. I've never taken the cable out of the drawer since.

Breeze Systems Downloader Pro, by the way, recognizes and downloads movies as well as image files.

Cheers,

Don

Not sure about avi's but jpeg's that have been modified in any way will not play through the camera. I don't think Canon wanted the camera to be used as a presentation device. You can definately put any file on the card (Excel, Word, psd) with a card reader. Whether you can play it through the camera is another story. Another thing. The video out seems to be a representation of the LCD. In the G6, that's 118,000 pixels. Not exactly hi-rez.
