Anyone carry a weapon while out 'shooting' ? I happened to have a carry permit, and after a friend of mine lost about $2500 in equipment to a strong-arm thief, I thought I'd just have one handy... Almost always go out with it, and certainly 'always' go out with it when I'm away from civilization to an extent shooting landscapes ..

Well, I needed it today. I wasn't out shooting pictures, but I was doing a little Geocaching across the canyon this afternoon - in an area that I do spend a lot of time taking photographs.. Nobody around - this is a fairly flat desert area with a generous scattering of large rocks and boulders.. I had my GPS in my hand and was just waking across the area, when I heard a couple of dogs barking very loudly - ... here they came - running at me full out - mad as hell - snarling and barking with teeth showing ..... Did I mention they were Rots' ?? - Extremely LARGE Rots... and thought this area of the prairie was theirs .. Right over the knoll, and had my 'nads' in their sights !!

I just froze - and they kept coming ... snarling and barking... the one was about 30 feet in front of me and I fired off 3 rounds in front of him, kicking up some dirt ... he stopped like he hit a wall, and here comes a girl over the same knoll yelling "Don't shoot my dogs, don't shoot my dogs".. She was out for a walk with them, and apparently they smelled something they didnt' like about me, and was gonna take me out... she put them on a leash and I told her that the dogs were realllly lucky - as much as animal lover as I am, and certainly would do everything in my power to avoid hurting an animal, I fired off these shots as a warning - but the next ones would have stopped them for good.. - and I would have had a hard time ever getting over that, but .. I know what a 130 pound Rot can do to a man if it's mad ...

There's no way she could have stopped them - I would have been kibbles if I hadn't had that weapon.. (Sig Sauer P229 Elite Stainless) - Anyone else have protection when they are out?

There's nothing more exciting than to be shot at............... and missed! ... Then, you're alive like you've never been before..

What happen to the guy who had this equipment stolen? If you point your gun at someone, your life has to be in danger. It's kind of a gray area to use a weapon to protect personal property. But, that depends on the state.

Personal property - yes. But if the attacker pulled a knife and the individual felt his life was in danger, you can return justified force to protect your life. Often times, the sight of a gun is enough to scare the crap out of another person, often preventing a justified situation. However, the theory is if you pull it, you better be ready and willing to use it. There can be no doubt in your head about whether you can pull that trigger.

I also carry anytime I might be out and about and put in that situation, especially if my wife is with me.

i dunno, i doubt the secret service would take kindly to me or any other member of the media packin heat.

in general, if my camera aint on my speed strap, its on my monopod.
and i perfer to cary my camera over my shoulder attached to the monopod.

i got that unlimited mack warranty covers pretty much anything so as far as im concerned, i dont have a camera, rather a very convient, solid piece of magnesium attached to 2 and a half feet of reinforced carbon composite..

i actually feel pretty secure with the beast..
simply because i know the last thing a potiential robber who wants my valuable equipment would think is me using the thing as a weapon.

me taking a very serious and controlled swing at him without so much as a thought would totally take him off guard and off his feet.
very few people would even consider that you might hit them with your "valuable" equipment.

besides, i would bet the camera would totally survive, where as the lens though might have to be surgically extracted from the person i hit.

.

MHO has always been that camera equipment can be a pretty formable weapon.

My state is very anti gun and getting a carry is next to impossible. Yes I do have target permit that only lets me own and shoot at a range. Not too good for self protection outside the home. I carry a pocket knife and in the city limits that could be a problem if it is clipped on my pocket and not in it. So if those dogs were after me I would be in a bad spot. I wonder if bear spray would stop them dogs.

The only problem is if the knife comes to bear on you before you manage to get it out. :( If the friend mentioned by the OP is the same person that posted here a week or so ago, the knife was to his throat before he knew what was going on...carry permit or no, you're SOL at that point.

Otherwise, I agree with huntersdad.

Yes, either a 9mm or .45 concealed, depending on what I am wearing.

I don't usually go out shooting alone if I know I am going to be in a not so good area.

I have been meaning to get my CCW permit for a long time though, I've just been lazy...

When I read the thread title, I thought you were asking if I carried condoms while out taking pictures.

I got 4 body guards and each of them carry Uzis. I've got rots of my own. 5 of them. I also carry a samurai sword, that cool looking knife Rambo used in those movies. Been looking at getting a light saber and a Harry Potter wand as a backup.

I think they are all legal in NYC. I could be wrong. But then again NYC is so much safer than where you guys are from. Man, must be tough. I'd be packing heat too...

my gear isn't worth it. I'd hand it over to someone than pull a gun on them. Who knows what the other person is packing, and pulling a gun would just escalate the situation. I do carry knife though, and one in the car, pretty much one anywhere in case I forget one for work.
