Good lord Canon, take the 5D2, put a better performing sensor in it, add the same AF system as the 7D, feel free to keep 3FPS as dual digic 4's will only be able to keep up with that data rate (if the 5D3 takes on a similar pixel density), add flash commander and other features in the newer cameras. Sell the camera for under $3000, make massive money.

The 5DII has a better AF system than the 7D for certain situations, eg ultra fast primes with thin DOF. Sure the 7D is better at AI Servo than the 5DII, but the sensitivity of that centre spot is still better than the centre spot on the 7D.

I'd hope that Canon "man-up" the 5DIII. Yes it would be good to have extra AF points, but I really would like dual card slots and better weather sealing (no more misty top LCD panels pls). I'd like the weight and size to remain the same. I'm happy with the current MP...but we all know that it's gonna bloat again. I'd really want to see the fps increasing to at least 6fps. Then it would compliment the faster tracking AF.

Just like how the 60D was better than the 50D in every possible way, huh?

I don't want to open a battle on the 60D, but it is worth pointing out that Canon does sometimes shift things around in the lineup to redefine categories.

the 60D is the 7D... whatever the "60D" is now is silly

That's my point - Five years ago Canon established their line as :

Entry - Rebel XT
Midrange - 20D
Affordable FF - 5D
Sports/PJ Pro - 1D II
Studio Pro - 1Ds II

And some people thought that these categories would never change apparently. But Canon has added the XS below the original Rebel line and shifted the T2i a bit higher.

Then they added the 7D above the old XXD line and shifted the 60D downmarket a bit.

And I cannot help but notice that the 1Ds II and 1Ds III were both launched two months behind the 1D versions and the 1Ds Mark IV is not following this timeline at all.

I think a shakeup in the FF camera line is coming.

Is this true?

Then try a 85mm f1.2 wide open close to MFD, the 7D stuggles

Or, put a 400 f/2.8, a 2X, and a 1.4X teleconverter on it and try to AF with the center point. The 7D will AF with a point away from center or next to the center, but the center point will not AF with this F-8 combination.

The 5D and 5D2 will.

(Note: The stacked teleconverters on the f/2.8 telephoto "fool" the camera into thinking that it is shooting through an f/5.6 lens so autofocus will work, or at least try to work)

(Note 2: The 5D/5D2 will not focus in this configuration with any other AF point besides the center AF point)

I recall maybe hearing this before, but I can't seem to find the information on sites like dpreview, care to link me?

Ah, so by using the camera in a non-intended function :p, good thing APS-C are natively 1.6x ;)

I regularly use both 7D and 5DII professionally. I know these AF systems inside out, why do you need some 3rd party web site to tell you the same? The 5D's centre point is excellent and locks on very fast, where the 7D gains is it's ability to track through the AF points. AI servo is where these two AF systems are different. The 5DII is better at driving centre point big aperture lenses with more accuracy, but the 7D is better at tracking with longer lenses (eg 200mm f2.8 / 400mm f5.6). My 35L and 50L on my 7D is a disaster zone, doubly so in low light. But on my pair of 5DII cameras, they are a delight.

So do I =P (well, not a 5D2, but a 5D) I use the 7D and 5D professionally and I'd say I know their abilities pretty well, I have not seen this difference you are speaking of.

I don't need a third party like GMCPhotographics to tell me, I need Canon to tell me. Sites like DPreview cite Canon sources, you are going off personal experience. No offense, but if you can't cite Canon, you are no better than any other random internet source for me.

Yes, but you don't often get Chuck Westfall talking on dpreview, he does regularly contribute on DWF. According to my paraphrase of his words, it's against the forum policy to cut and paste, so here's a paraphrase: the 7D's af system will most likely go in the future 5D models but a tuned version (previous thread entries were talking about 85L and 35L thin DOF accuracy).
DPreview is fine but their lens tests are very limited and not very comprehensive. The forum, well, I try to stay out of there as much as I can. There's some real muppets with a lot of personal issues that frequent that forum.

My main concearn with the 7D's af system in the 5DIII is the lack of interchangeble focussing screens. I really like using the Eg-S screen on my 5DII's and it really helps me see the slim DOF with my 35/50/85 Primes wide open.

I have no experience with the forum there, I like it here, people here are nice =)

Anyways, as for focusing screens, Katz eye seems to make em for the 7D, but the installation is a little more involved than the 5D (and I suspect it might mess with metering a little)

I do like my EE-S focusing screen for my 5D :)

I don't see how focus screens are going to be a problem with the 7D AF on the 5D III. The 1D bodies have 45 AF points.
