Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #92
Something Old

"Old" can be a relative term, but for this challenge, show us something that shows its age, whether tattered, worn, wrinkled, or simply dated. Let your image convey the fact that your subject is somewhat "old".

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR camera
2. Lens - Any lens, or attachment that can give Macro photos (ex. extension tubes, bellows, macro filters, reverse mounted lens and of course a true macro lens.).
3. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
4. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
5. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
6. Posting -
* ONE MACRO PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
* Photo Name/Title in the message.
* Camera model & lens used in the message.
* Post brief Exif data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used in the message.
* Notes - anything you feel you need to explain.
7. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
8. Questions - Use PM
9. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 7:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time Thursday, October 7th, 2010 . Winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

U.S. One-Dollar coin, minted 2 years after Custer had that bad day on the Little Bighorn and 3 years before the Earps and the Clanton-McLaury gang had that disagreement in the alley next to Fly's photo studio.

very used and long travelled old nickel

Old Nickel. Found on my counter with all my other change from 2009. Got me thinking about things that happened in 1941 where this nickel could have been in some ones pocket.
May 15 Joe DiMaggio starts his 56 game hitting streak.
July 17 Joe Dimaggio's hitting streak ends.
Sept 17 Cardindals Stan Musial makes his major league debut
Sept 28 Ted Williams ends season batting .406
Oct 6 New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 1 to win their 38th World Series
Dec 7 Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, a date that will live in infamy
All this and a lot more happened in the year of my nickel.

Thanks to those who participated in this week's challenge! As usual there were some great entries.

GJim and Old Dollar - That's defintitely an old coin! Thanks for the backstory on it too. What's the greenish part on the right?

Imeddy and very used and long travelled old nickel - I used to love to find an old coin like that in my pocket. They had a higher silver content, didn't they? I know they sounded a little different when dropped. This one was definitely worn!

Jason C and Full Manual - What kind of an old lens is that? It looks to be in remarkably good condition. Nice composition and contrast on the shot too!

JohnB and 16 meg CF - 16 meg? I remember when that was big for its size. Now it wouldn't hold one full res 5dMKII image! :)

I'm giving this one to Jason and his Full Manual image. It's the one that spoke to me the most.
HM goes to GJim and Old Dollar. I liked the uniqueness of the coin and the detail on the image!

Thanks again for shooting folks!

Thank you Lisa. Excellent work everyone. Hey Jim, is that a money clip? Belt buckle?

Lisa, the camera in the photo is an Ansco B2 Speedex, a run of the mill cheapy medium format from 1946 and technically an uncoupled rangefinder. The lens is an 85mm f/4.5. You not only need to meter the scene with a light meter (or know your Sunny 16), but one also has to dial in the distance for the focus. I've yet to run film through the B2, but when I do I'll use my Sears KSX super 35mm to meter and get distance.

I'll have the next Macro challenge up tonight.

Thanks again.

Jason C

My image is of a money clip, small turquoise decorations also shown. I should have used greater DOF so that they were in better focus.

Jason C's shot is great - I would have voted for it myself.
