I'm having a bit of a rethink about how I post images in forums and display them. Would appreciate your comments.

Typically I'd post a medium sized image (maybe 500-800px) as a kind of thumbnail and you can click it as a link to an even larger size (maybe 1000px). eg

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4029/4516793959_4330a82ca3_d.jpg
IMAGE LINK: http://www.flickr.com …ypiggo/4516793959/sizes/l (external link)

But I've never been happy with Flickr's white background. I'm thinking about 2 possible better backgrounds for the larger image display. One is to use Flickr's lightbox:

The other is to use something like decluttr.com:

What I don't like about the above is they don't show the text/description under the photos. I could do something similar to the decluttr idea on my own web server and have it add the description etc.

Thoughts? Comments?

I don't click photos, so what ever you post, that's what I'll see.

Curious as to the reason why you don't click the photos? Security concerns?

I quite often look at larger versions of shots than the 800-1000px version and am blown away by the detail. I guess I'm talking about macro shots where you can really see eye detail on a fly etc, or maybe an astro photo where in the large version you can make out background small/faint galaxies etc. Detail that isn't noticeable in the medium sized version.

Still after some feedback on this. Anyone else got thoughts or comments to add?

That would be my preference. No overhead of loading the album scripts, checking for cookies, etc.

Ideally you could launch a LB overlay right here on POTN that grabs the image from your server.

I personally dislike flickr, and the decluttr thou nice has there logo on the bottom right of your work. For a hobby that would be ok, for a ease into the business side, I wouldn't want the public to associate my work as being there's. Againg I dislike filckr and if I read right for decluttr, you still need a flickr account.
Smugmug has a free side with some control, though how much I could not tell you. I use there pro setup for blind links and client second side purchases.

That would be my preference too. I think it might only take the POTN wizards including the relevant LB JS code in the header of the forum page, so it could be referenced. I am not a fan of clicking on images, especially when they bring up a new tab in my browser, at a site that I may not be familiar with, that may require me to know a different form of navigation to, etc, etc. Or as Mike said, "lazy".

But I certainly agree in the case of your astro images, big is way better.
