I had a go at using my G11 for street photography today and came back with some good results.. It's not as fast as a DSLR due to some shutter lag but the swivel screen is brilliant for getting those low shots..

Image quality is great bearing in mind I only shot at 400 ISO..

Just curious - do you ask for permission first before shooting?

Nice, Jurgen. I like how quiet the G11 is, it's virtually silent like the old Hexar AF in stealth mode.

I bought a G10 specifically for street photography and almost sold it because I was INITIALLY unhappy with the results I was getting. It had ALMOST everything I wanted, but the shutter lag and a-little-too-touchy controls were really getting in the way of spontaneous shooting. Then I read a blog post about that changed my experience completely, and ever since, I have been absolutely thrilled with my G10 as a street shooter. NO shutter lag anymore, exposures about 95% within a usable range as long as you have a little bit of PP skill, incredibly easy to return to the settings in an instant.

My son has a G11, I helped him set it up the same way as my G10, and because there's an extra stop or two of ISO range before sensor noise overwhelms the photo, it's even BETTER for street.

Here's the post (external link) that will change your street shooting experience (long and detailed, but worth every second).

Nice shots Jurgen. Here are a few G11 candids I took recently. Gotta love that G11 ! Getting these with a DSLR would have been more difficult.

I enjoy street photography and have just ordered a G12, having never used the G series cameras before I wonder if there's anything in that article that needs updating or changing for the G12?

I found that most of the instructions worked fine on both the G10 and G11. Any differences seemed to be from features/settings that weren't available in the newer models. Auto ISO shift in the shortcut button would be nice, but I don't think it's available any more.

Whatever was there worked fine and made a world of difference for street shooting.

Most important things were:
- manual focus at about 8' - NO zooming, always stay at full wide angle (think of it as having a 28mm prime lens)
- Av mode, f4.5
- Safety MF must be off
- I saved the same settings in BOTH C1 and C2 for convenience, when I muck up a setting, it's super easy to reset.
- DON'T hit MF (up on the control button) to check your focal distance, it messes up the setting. Cycle through the exposure/MF with the metering button.

In addition to being an awesome camera in general, the G11 can get shots that my 50D wouldn't have been able to get (inconspicuously, that is).

My first attempts at street...

@RIgnacio. Exactly. The G11 has a 'stealth' factor that an SLR cannot match. And the articulating display allows you to not only more easily shoot from different angles, but also to properly frame and shoot a picture w/o appearing to do so.

Yes that articulating screen is one of my favorite features. I can take shots low to the ground w/out getting on the ground and dirtying my clothes (which is important when I'm out shooting during lunch and have to be back in the office)
