Hey all. Video is new to me...from a 7d. I have read a lot from all of you here and other places about the various programs you use to edit your 5d II and 7d videos. My question is, will this program from Sony work for me: http://www.amazon.com …B003L51CZ8/ref=pd_cp_sw_1 (external link)
I am not looking to go pro or make really fancy stuff. Just want to edit choppy bits out or out of focus bits and then burn to dvd/blu ray for family to watch.

Windows Movie Maker that comes free is capable of doing that for you. This was edited using it.

I can be wrong: but to my knowledge we can not import or edit MOV video's directley
in Moviemaker. Maybe the new WIN 7 but Vista and XP can't edit MOV files.

Good luck.

Thought I'd add my .02 here. Before I purchased a video editor I did some research. There are lots of bad experiences with just about all of the Editors out there including Sony Vegas, Pinnacle, Premiere and Final Cut to name a few. As well as great reviews on each.

Point is - a lot depends on your system configuration and how old (or new) the laptop or desktop is.

You can find an editor that is within your price range then download a trial and see if it works with your specific system.

agreed. My system is decent....and about 1.5 years old. I upgrade my own pc about 2 years.

The Sony program you're inquiring about will do what you want. You may want to download a trial version to make sure your desktop likes it ;) It allows users to edit HDV footage natively. So you shouldn't have to convert to an intermediate file type before editing. This is where a lot of folks have problems - editing the native .mov file straight out of the camera. Even with a good program like Sony's here they find they need to convert the file to something more easily managed so they can edit the footage.

I use Grass Valley's Edius Neo 2 Booster. It's 100% stable and fast - at least on my PC :) The thing I'm not sure about is if it is as intuitive to use as the Sony product. If I can figure it out I think anybody can though :D

Sony Vegas is a light but powerful software. I ran it on a single core AMD Dell desktop computer edited about 3 pieces ~3-5min long. 2gb of ram was able to edit pretty well.

I now run it on intel dual core laptop and AMD 6cores desktop.

Thanks all for the input! I need to re-cjeck..but I think I am running intel core 2 duo 4g ram, I forget the specs and don't feel like looking...I am dragging today. Have 3 Hd @ 250gb each. 1 for C, 2 for storage...running out of room fast.

To do basic cutting you can use a free tool such as mpeg streamclip.
