I'm looking to round out my range of primes with a wide angle to complement my existing 50 - 100 - 200 glass. Since I'm 3/4 retired, an L is not an option.

It'll be used on all three bodies - FF, 1.3 and 1.6.

Having searched the forum and elsewhere my initial urge is the Sigma 24mm 1.8 but am persuadable towards the

Canon 20 2.8
Canon 24 2.8
Sigma 28 1.8.

The Canon 28 1.8 seems out of stock around here . . . .

Recommendations and warnings welcomed.

Thanks.

The 20mm 2.8 doesn't seem to get many great reviews. I have the 24mm 2.8 and its a good solid lens. Another idea is the very inexpensive 28mm 2.8. It has great center sharpness wide open at 2.8 and is a bit of a sleeper. The 24mm has slightly better corner sharpness however. But the best bang for the buck lens would be the 28mm 2.8. Youi'll see some recommendations for the Sigma 30mm 1.4 I'm sure.

I did check out the 30 1.4, but the concensus seems to be pretty severe vignetting on the 5D, so I ruled it out. But, again, I'm persuadable.

Interesting to see that you've put the Canon 20mm/2.8 and Sigma 28mm/1.8 lenses ... why not combine the two with the Sigma 20mm/1.8?

I use one as my sole wide-angle lens and also for working in (Edinburgh Fringe, as it happens) theatres characterised by their low light and I wouldn't be without it ...

There are much sharper and better(all around) manual focus alternatives. The olympus 21/3.5 is an example.

Unfortunately, my absolute budget limit is £450, and the cheapest I can find locally for the Sigma 20 1.8 is a ba' hair over £500. And I've no time to save - I need the lens for a pre-marathon party in Inverness tomorrow night! A low-light event with the prospect of a 'sair heid' (no, I'm not a runner; that's my daughter) . . .

I distinctly remember mine costing a lot less than that, actually in the region of the ~£330 the 28mm f/1.8 currently retails at, otherwise I don't think I'd have bought it - I wouldn't have been able to either ... I do tend to sell kit to fund other purchases but I definitely didn't sell the 17-40 that I owned until after the 20mm and my 100mm Macro was traded for an 85mm - sold much later. None of this helps you in any way, I'm just confused now ...

Best of luck with your decision and the subsequent party - indeed to your daughter in the marathon!

Lot of positive comments about the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm/2.8...

However, it's manual focus only. Still, not much of an issue MFing a lens of that FL.

I am personally looking at the canon 28 f/1.8. For me it would be a great normal prime on my 50D 1.6x. Also it will be compatible w/ FF if i decide to upgrade later. It has USM and full time manual focusing, im liking the photos i see. On FF it will be a nice wide angle focal length.

I wouldn't recommend the other canon short primes, i don't think they are USM and are of cheaper build quality and optics.

Yeah,

too bad the 28/1.8 is out of stock where you're located, OP. Damn good little lens...
