So... who says a G10 can't do bokeh?

All the bokeh you need? And no, they were way too cheap to rustle up an air bridge...

@alan_potter. Was macro focus on here ? It looks like it could have been. Yes you can get some bokeh in macro mode. It actually call this more 'out of focus background' than bokeh. Try getting bokeh in std focus mode. There is little to be had there.

You're exactly right... It's just a bit of fun... the G10 is a fine camera, but there are some things it's better for than others. Bokeh is one of the others...

bokeh, IIRC, is/are the little rings of specular highlights you get:

IMAGE: http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af339/smrndmguy/People/Resize10001of1-2-3.jpg

50 f/1.4 shot wide open on a 7D. Notice that all of the lights that would normally be in focus, are out of focus and appear as a circle? Bring your G10 in the car at night, zoom in as far as you can and manually set the focus to as near as possible. Notice that street lights will become OOF on your screen and should look like little colorful dots/circles.

Also, to answer your question in your title... Physics. Physics says so :)

Alan, bokeh or not, I love this photo! Well done :)

Here is a good article on bokeh with some great examples:

 You're ALL wrong. "bokeh" is when you're trying to say "OK" with a stuffed up nose.

And yes, you can get bokeh out of a G series. Just not as easily as with an SLR........

G3, no macro mode:

bokeh refers to the quality of the blur, not the quantity

Yeah on my G10 i find i can get some bokeh/background blur either by using macro or zooming in while getting in close to the subject eg someones face.

I'm guessing this would work even better with G9's longer focal length.

czeglin, you're right about the use of the word "bokeh" but might as well give up that debate -- I have. I no longer use the "bokeh" word and now simply talk about background blur.

I have the G9 and did made a short study and experiment of my attempts to get background blur when the main subject is portrait sized; it just doesn't work out. Part of the problem is that the G series maximum apertures change with focal length. See my trials at http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/search/label/dof (external link)

He's judged bokeh from blur for years.
