Anyone remember the name of the site that offers designers a platform to bid on designing your logo?

Design outpost did a good job for me.

Who can spot the bitter/grumpy person in this thread?

Nah, I just don't think it's these are the ideal place to have a logo done, that's all. It's a means to an end though, you'll most likely come away with a logo, but just don't be surprised if you don't get what you want.

Hiring a designer directly, would get you that. Admittedly, it's a more time consuming affair and maybe more expensive, but the old adage goes: you get what you pay for.

I've heard more stories of people hiring a single designer and being unhappy than dissatisfaction with a logo auction site. I mean one person, who you don't know, compared with a dozen designs competing? Which do you think is going to work better?

I got a logo I really like from a designer working through design outpost. I know people say it's too cheap, but if they didn't want to be there, they wouldn't be.

I'm betting you have PS experience and maybe then some. Do some searches on google and youtube for logo tutorials, you'll get some ideas pretty fast. I didn't really go out on a limb with mine, simple translucent circle with my initials CS and a bit of edging and drop shadow, use it for a watermark too. Sorry, can't find a good accessible sample right now.

Logo bidding sites aren't bad, sometimes you get generic sometimes you get something perfect. And same with hiring a designer, they might get it wrong the first time. If you get someone good, they'll work with it until it's exactly what you like.

What's that one website where you ask photographers to shoot your project, and then you pay the one who does the best?

Crowdsourcing, aka spec-work, is like Wal-Mart, cheap, convenient, but bad for everybody in the long run. It floods the market with average designs, while encouraging plagiarism and copyrights violations. Nobody polices these to make sure designs are original. Nobody checks the projects to see if the proper permissions are in place to use photographs. If you use a design that somebody else stole, you could end up paying for it. On top of all that, it's also insulting to creative professionals everywhere
