If you resize your images to 720 on the long side before uploading, there are no issues.

I've found that PNG format helps a bit too or perhaps its just personal superstition in my uploading experience there.

I just found out these changes the hard way >_<
Posted a few client preview photos at full res as always, assuming it'd resize them for me.
Anyway, it took me a few hours to realise my mistake - AFTER showing the client, argh.

You should only upload the resolution you are comfortable with displaying. Never depend on any site to resize your images, that's just silly. Also, I have caught people using my photos without permission on fb for their own, profiles, etc. I reported this violation to fb (they have a means to claim copyright violation) and the images were taken down within 12 hours, the user was also warned that one more violation meant a termination of thier account.

Well, you don't. But the average soccer mom who wants to share her photos with family so that they can print them off at Walmart has been a big request for them. Within it's niche, it makes sense. It's probably a good move.

People shared photos before social networking sites were around. They can be emailed and even photos 1000 pixels on the long side will make a decent 4x6 print and a photo that size will not be a big file since a JPG compression setting would be used by default.

I personally won't be putting up 1000px, I'll stick to my 800 with my watermark as I do on flickr.
