I've been using AEB to produce 3 shots to import into Photomatrix with a resulting 8-9MB HDR JPG file. Using the G12's HDR you only end up with one file and it's about the same 2+MB size as the rest of the single shot files. Anyone have a clue how they do this

you can only do this two ways, in-camera processing of 2-3 shots taken at different exposure values (this is what some DSLRs can do) but the final image is prone to motion artifact unless you had the camera on a tripod.
or you can do some creative histogram and tone mapping in-camera, which can be accomplished with presets already built in before the image is conveted to a jpeg. there is a surprising amount of dynamic range in a digital RAW image file if you're willing to dig for it.
