Just messing around... I've not shot food before, so C&C is definitely welcome.

This was shot with a 24-105 on a 40D, lit entirely with on-camera 580EXII, bounced off the ceiling and wall on the left of the subject. 45mm, f/9, 1/200, ISO 200. I know that I messed up on the cilantro leaf and the bit of oil beneath the foremost scallop. Anything else to keep in mind, given what I have (and my modest cooking skills :p).

Thanks!

it would be nice to see the background as white, if not whiter than the plate. or even a different colour.

i find it a tiny bit underexposed. perhaps thats the background. the plate shadow is nice. i think all in all, it's good.

f/9? Most food shots I've seen have a fairly shallow depth of field.

I would play with the styling a bit more. The tomatoes on the corn could be more evenly distributed. I like that the cilantro in the shot, but I don't think it's being used to its fullest potential. Either get more of it and place it under the scallops, or have it sticking up out of the food somehow.

What's the green in the salsa? I think it would add a lot of there was a little bit of it sprinkled on top of the salsa.

I strongly recommend checking out this video:

I think with a little effort you could improve this a lot, but your food does look delicious!

Thanks for the feedback!

Didn't think about styling the food too much, as this was my dinner :D, but I'll have to keep that in mind going forward. The green in the salsa is also cilantro - you're right though, adding some on top would give it a nice touch.

I'd like to see a few more highlights in the food to give the shot some 'life'.

Yeah more highlights would look more vibrant and enticing to eat!
