I was wondering if any has ever constructed/(bought?) a large diffuser panel or something to shoot people in direct sunlight with no additional lights etc. Theory is I could use f1.8 in full sun with diffused light. I usually would have to find shade and use additional flash to balance which is not always possible.

Yes.
We built a huge tent with wood frames to cover a Jaguar coupe with 2 models in front of a Rochester NY brick estate.
The sun would have killed the relection of chrome and glass.
Prob not needed if cloudy day but it was sunny.
What a way to spend a sunny day!
It took over 20 bed sheets.
Shot it on 8x10 chrome with a Linholf.

California Sunbounce offers a variety of scrims. If you want to build your own, here's a link to make your own based off of Dean Collin's lite panels:

If you go much bigger than the size in the tutorial, which you'll probably need to do for group shots, then you'd probably want to use aluminum tube instead of PVC.

Also The Best Of Dean Collins Lighting video has a whole section dedicated to outdoor lighting using only scrims and reflectors so it might be a good thing to check out.

Oh wow the pre-made ones are very expensive... Good thing it looks pretty easy to make. Any ideas on the best way to use one with a light stand. It seems like a assistant would make it a lot easier haha. Has anyone ever used any type of stakes to secure them in the wind or are sandbags the norm?
