We seldom have moist air here in inland San Diego County, but it was unusually moist during the first portion of the Marine Corps Air Station 2010 Airshow. This humid air resulted in some spectacular moisture envelopes as the jets sped by.

Are these from Friday or yesterday? Friday was one of the worst days I have seen at Miramar in the last several years.

These are great. And you're right, we rarely get that kind of vapor effect with our "perfect" weather here.

Boy that third shot is unique. Haven't seen a vapor pattern like that before.

I was there Friday, and it was the first time I saw so much vapor, I loved it! However, it was a huge challenge since one part of the sky was blue with puffy clouds, and the other side was gray! In addition, it was a huge learning experience for me.

The previous images were shot on Friday. The show was late starting because of the weather and it was misty and overcast through much of it.

I used my 300mm f/4L IS lens hand-held on a 40D with the IS tuned to Mode 2. I used spot metering and AV priority since the venue was grey and overcast. I used the slower burst mode. I used ISO 400 but could have cut that down to ISO 200.

Several years ago it was a lot clearer but the show is still pretty backlit... here is a shot from 2007 as an example of the difference in clarity.

Great vapor shots! Most shows that I attended this year were in the dead of summer, and unfortunately had almost no vapor, whereas a show in late may in previous years had a ton of vapor. I don't know what makes for ideal vapor conditions, however, it seems to be more prevalent in the cooler months.
