While I have, um, more than a few Crumpler Million Dollar Home camera bags, lately I've been carrying gear that just doesn't fit the way I want in any of them, so I've been using my Timbuk2 messenger bags instead. That can get pretty messy, as I just have a couple neoprene lens bags, which means everything ends up jumbled in a pile. Not good.

Mostly I carry the 16-35mm, the 24-105 on the 60d body, and either the 10-22mm, the 100-400mm, or the 430ex. My Timbuk2 XS Classic messenger is actually the perfect size for all this, and if I need to carry a little more I can step up to the Small Classic Messenger, but neither one has any sort of division that allows for proper organization.

So I'd like to find an insert (or 3) that I can use for 2 lenses and a body with lens attached, or lens+flash+body w/lens. I'm looking for either a single, 3-compartment insert, or 2-3 single compartment inserts that would fit. For reference, the interior dimensions of the XS Messenger are about 12w x 8h x 5d, so that's my size limit.

Any suggestions are appreciated, I know there are some folks here who are using a setup similar to what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Apparently I should have been more specific. :D Which Domke (or otherwise) inserts?

I've tried the FA-280 (single compartment) before, and it was too small for my 100-400mm, but too tall for easy use with the other lenses.

The FA-230 looks interesting, I'll have to take a look at it.

Here are some pictures of an FA-230 with a 100-400, a 16-35, and a 24-105 (from left to right).

And a couple more pictures to help give you an idea. The bag is a small classic messenger.

Thanks, Theus. I dug out my measuring tape, and it looks like the way the bag is stitched, the widest interior compartment I should get is only 10.5. Although based on the photo of the FA-230 in the Small Classic Messenger, I could probably make the FA-230 fit, but it seems to be out of stock most places anyway. Same with the Tenba PP12 insert, which is at least in stock at a few places.

So, after spending an hour frying my brain trying to figure out insert sizes and options, I think my options are:

  • 2x FA-216 short - 1 on each end, then put the camera lens-down (yes, there will be padding below) between them.
  • 1x FA-211 - for the 100-400mm lens, swap this in for one of the FA-216 inserts when necessary.

or

  • 1x FA-220 dual insert for 1 lens or flash plus
  • 1x FA-211 single insert

or

  • Domke FA-230

or
  • Tenba PP-12 Paded insert

I'll just let that percolate around in my little brain for a bit to see what else occurs to me, other thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

This would all have been so much easier if velcro would stick to the interior of the bag, then I could just use my spare Crumpler dividers to pad the bottom and create compartments.

Would it work to just get some wide strips of sticky velcro (with adhesive backing) and stick strips of the "loop" side on the inside walls of the bag?

Domke's redone their inserts; most if not all of them now have movable inner dividers - you may be seeing the delay in new product shipping after the older ones are sold off.

As to adding velcro to the bag; my F802 doesn't have velcro (it's intended as a messenger bag more than a photo bag ("Reporter's Satchel"), yet I don't have a problem with the 720-230 insert slipping around; I keep my flash at the end of the bag and that fills in any remaining space nicely.

The Tenba won't fit your dimensions. It's too long. It may fit in your larger bag.

Re the velcro: I could find a way to add velcro, but I'd either have to stick it in one spot, thus losing adjustability for the internal layout, or find a way to make both (or at least one) inside wall full velcro-covered. Either way, that's more of a jury-rig solution than I'm inclined to do these days.

Re the Tenba inserts: the more popular white (gray?) messenger insert will most certainly not fit my XS messenger, but might fit my Small messenger. Their less popular "Wedding Insert" might fit my XS messenger, and is more similar to what I want than the Domke.

However, reviewing the Tenba and Domke inserts at lunch today, Amazon gave me another suggestion:

The Camaroo Camera Insert. The listed dimensions are pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, reviews are good, and it costs less than a single Domke, let alone 2-3. So, it's on order and I'll give it a try. At worst, it doesn't fit my messenger bag properly and I'll use it for storing lenses at home instead of my 6MDH, which is not very practical.
