If I tried to steal something worth 3 grand in the street, the cops would check for video surveillance pics of the act and charge me.

Since this eBay fraud on the 5D is tantamount to attempted theft, the perp should be charged. Enough of the shoulder shrugs... get these web thieves off to reform school! Every packet of info carries I.D. details equivalent to a letterhead - charge these guys!

Zero tolerance on net fraud!!

you outbid me by $1!!!!

seriously, though - after playing with it, i think i'm going to get one as my principal second body. i won't be getting a grip, though, as i've taken it off the 10d and enjoy the smaller feel. i'll wait until the unavailability and premium price dies down first...

I decided to bury this post in this thread because I had to get it out of my system and right now I am short on others I can discuss this with and have them understand the dilema (somewhat).

After much angst and consternation I have decided NOT to buy the 5D as a backup camera to my 1DsMkII. I am keeping my 10D for backup. There are two primary reasons.
1. I don't like the focus screens they offer for the 5D. Me like split screen, no like laser matte - no matter how sharp.
2. It does not have a faster FPS then what I have now.

Secondary reasons include:
- I still have 4 lenses left on my list and would like to get two of them for christmas (The 85/1.2 tops the list).
- My hopes and aspirations of making money have not been meeting even my relatively low expectations (this may still change, but not so far)
- I expect a 1D(s)MkIII next year with either 20+MP at 4+FPS or 16+MP at 8+FPS, so would rather save for that expectation
- I am slightly worried the ecomony is going to tank and I can think of much better uses for my money at this time.
- Only one flash card slot (I kind of like having two now that I have them)

It was very close though as I loved the thought of having a full frame backup camera with almost the same capabilities of the 1DsMkII. I also liked the fact that my spare batteries I have for my 10D will fit the 5D and it would have forced me to actually part with my D60 and 10D to meet my budget (this is actually a good thing, except I am probably just going to give them to my neice and nephew). Lastly It would have been a great travel camera with the lighter weight.

But having what is still the best 35mm format DSLR (except for sports and photojournalism) in the 1DsMkII, my level of desire for the 5D did not quite make it. Given my formula for camera purchases ((Camera / Money) - Time) * Desire = purchase the 5D would probably need to be at the $2750 mark to make it. Which means close, but no 5D.

Note: there is still a very small chance I may change my mind (or win the lottery), but I doubt it.

Thanks for letting me get it out of my system. you guys at least might understand my angst in this decision.

Well I took the first step toward 5D ownership today. I submitted my requisition to sell back two weeks of my hard-earned PTO (vacation time) for cash. After the 6% penalty for cashing it out, I'll net almost enough to cover the purchase. Now, I just have to wait until October, when the sellback checks come out, then scrape up the difference, then order it, then wait for it . . .

My trusty 10D will be relegated to second string by the end of the year, with any luck.

Interesting. What values in what units do you fill in in that formula?

I have a 10D now and I'm still feeling that my desire parameter is very high for the 5D...

It seems so much better than my 10D: full frame, twice as many pixels, better AF system (faster, better low light performance, more accurate), less noise, spot meter, ISO in 1/3 stop steps, better viewfinder, better and larger LCD, RGB histogram, faster startup time and CF write speed, etc... But is all that worth twice the amount of money I paid for my 10D?

My plan until now is to save money the coming months and I hope that early next year the 5D will be a few hundred euros cheaper. There are some places here that already are offering it for 3000 euros (instead of 3300 - 3400). Maybe if it's down to around 2500 - 2700 in the beginning of next year...

The last few days I've sold some photography stuff I didn't use anymore (EOS 30, film scanner, 420 EX and ST-E2), but it's still a long way before I have the money for the 5D...

And if I have the 5D, I'll also need more CF cards and I'll want a faster computer to handle those big RAW files...

As nice as the 5D appears, I really don't see it being a replacement for the 20D.
Apart from the much higher price, it's a full frame, doesn't accept EF-S lens, no pop-up flash, and it comes without a lens plus several more features.
It would be a nice upgrade from my 10D but far to expensive.

Brian

My XT came with both a lens and a pop up flash. The best thing that happened to my photography (both my enjoyment of it and the quality of my photos) was to get rid of the kit lens and buy an external flash so I did not use the pop up flash. The pop up flash was always worthless for me.

Jesper - Do you know what the write speed is of the 5D and the 20D?
Are you shure the write speed from the 5D is faster then the 20D?
Is there a link to this information somewhere?

Thank you.

I'm not sure about the actual write speed, but the 5D has a bigger buffer than the 20D, so even though the 20 has more FPS, the 5D outdoes the 20D in terms of the continuous buffer, which does help in write speed.

Continuous buffer
5D: Up to 60 JPEG or 17 RAW frames
20D: Up to 23 JPEG or 6 RAW frames

I am in exactly the same boat. 10D and all. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the 3fps speed. With the 10D, I find that 3 fps is a bit slow - especially if I am bracketing my exposures with the intent of PS Blending. It is hard to hold still enough for 1 full second (for all 3 shots) AND have the shots register on an individual pixel basis.

I am wrestling with the fact that this camera is 90% of what I have been dreaming of. And the 100%er is just a couple more years down the road. Wait and buy next gen, or buy, sell, and buy again.

Oh well, I could have worse things to worry about.

So how about a compromise with the 1D MKII. It'll give you speed and higher resolution with a smaller crop factor.
