so i didnt have TO many good shots. but i did want to share the best ones that i had and that i am the most proud of. Now i had someone on an import forum of mine say that the first one looked stupid cause the car didnt show motion and looked still.

My rebuttle to the argument is one, i was at the top of a hill in a corner so getting this shot was even a hell of a chance and two, he was coming out of a slow corner so he wasnt on a straight where i could try and PAN.

anyways here are my few fav.

Shot 1 is fine. There is still a bit of blur and you can tell the car is moving towards the camera. It isn't the best but it doesn't look parked to me.

Fun event for sure!

Ask the clown from the import forum to show you a better shot. Ya gotta love people that rip other's work and have none of their own to back it up.

well he is a photographer, and does features for modified mag and what have you but i honestly think he fails to see the artistic side of photography. no one is going to have the same ****. im sorry that this picture was not from the side of the car where the wheels were moving.

it just is really funny to me how comes and says that this picture is a good one but it should have the car giving the feel of being in motion. personally i LOVE how i got it dead stopped on the track like that when it was coming around the corner.

your shutter speed was 1/1250....thats waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fast. unless your a crackhead that hasnt had a fix in 2 days and your whole body is convulsing then you should have no issue at all with a 1/100 shutter speed and i know plenty of people that shoot track events at 1/50 shutter speed handheld with a MUCH heavier camera body and lens set up than what you have.

again, im not trying to be dick but every time i try to give you advice you just shoot it down. im not trying to be an ******* or beat you down im honestly trying to help i swear to god. im far from the best photographer in the world but i know a photo of a race car on a track should have a sense of motion, not look like its parked there.

I couldnt shoot at 1/100, I tried, countless times trust me. i couldnt. I hate to sound like i dont want to take advice from you. cause i do. and im not saying yours for this isnt a good one. but i posted this shot cause its perfect to me.

im the kinda person, i hate to say this, that doesnt want help unless i ask for it. sorry to sound crude

Not too bad, you need to be around at least 60-160th on the shutter speed. Also your composition needs some working on, #1 has too much negative space on the bottom of the image, try cropping the image on a 16x9 scale. #2 seems too tight maybe a tad wider would of worked out better. #3 well #3 does nothing really, maybe a slower shutter would of blurred out the BG making it a bit better. #4 has no prime subject, looks like you just snapped it just for the hell of it. You need to focus on a subject in any shot. Now if #4 was a tad wider and you focused on the Audi and the audi was a little farther back on the track it would of been a better shot.

Please do not think we are out to get you on your shots, but they simply lack in certain areas. Always keep in mind the rule of thirds. You need to place the subjest near or on on one those points when shooting.

See how I place the subject in the lower left, I place it a bit farther then the rule of thirds would call for but it also works this way as well.

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3391/4646148501_6367f147a1_o.jpg

Your #4 would look better if you caught it at this angle.

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/4641418918_379334aca1_o.jpg

Also keep in mind the a wide angle shot will also work, and it not about tight on the car all the time.Too wide will kill the image but just wide enough will work, like this.

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4041/4640811539_e92f657c96_o.jpg

All these images where cropped to a 16x9 aspect. I just created a custom crop setting in Lightroom or when you crop in photoshop just enter 16x9 and crop it. It works out pretty good if your shot allows you to crop it like this.

Hope next time your out you apply different techniques. You have room for improvement, just keep at it and before you know it you will be shooting better. How did you shoots these images? what mode, iso ect?

thanks chad....i appreciate you trying to follow me :)

anyways, S.E.V yeah i was trying to get as many angles and positions as i could but i didnt really have the greatest lenses and i was having to squeeze in between people to allow me to even get some shots. this was my first attempt at it and i feel like i did a pretty good shot. that first one i had already cropped it as there was still a lot more space in the back ground and i cropped most of it out. i wanted to leave some in the front just for the feel, to me it made it look better.

Gorgeous shots btw SEV

Every photographer has a different POV and style they go after, there is no set rule that every photographer must follow. If there where every single image would Identically the same and what fun would that be? But in certain cases and certain shots they kind of need to follow a basic guide line. Showing movement on a race car gives the overall image a dynamic view, but some motorsports shots require a higher shutter speed to stop the car in motion. But if you shoot all your shots the exact same way, whats the point? Mixing it up a bit adds that extra flavor to the series. Keep an open mind on others views as well.

SEV, i fluctuated on a lot of my settings through out the day as i wasnt really used to getting moving cars in frame and what have you. i stayed between 100-400 iso all day, and then when it came to shutter it ranged sometimes from 160 up th 1250. cause i wasnt really good at panning i couldnt really get the slower shutter speeds no matter the amount of attempts i tried. i started to get it slower and slower as time went on through out the day. at one point i was using 125 i believe i THINK thats what the gt40 was shot at im not sure though, i dont remember. i know i have room for improvement on some areas, but i knwo there also not that bad. atleast i don think so

with that first shot. i prefer to have that space on the bottom, to me it shows where the cars going. i didnt want to have just hte car in the frame..and i thought it was framed well when it came to the 3rds rule. my gf who is in school for photography mentioned it to me and and when i showed her the shot she said it was good.

Thanks Hahahaha i was in the same place as you when I started to get into morotsports. But it is not about the equipment at all, it is all about the photographer, once the photographer is good, then the equipment comes into play. You need to think outside of the box, or as they say over on the APN forum, Shoot outside the fence. Always look for different spots around the track to shoot from. At a track like road atlanta there are plenty of spots around the track to shoot from, RA is like Laguna Seca, where there are tons of spots around the track that have great shot opportunities. Next time you go to the track look for other areas of interest, move around and as for the people maybe getting a little fold up stool from bed bath and beyond or maybe walmart so you can stand over others and the fences to get your shots, I see this a lot and it is catching on every time I go to the track. Just trying to give you pointers for next time.

Sevan:)

Well you are on the right path. Just keep at it slowly drop your shutter speed, the iso range is good, eventually you will be shooting in manual mode and nailing your panning. As for your #1 shot the cars is place on the upper right third, placing the car on the lower right would keep the space below the car still showing where it is going and giving more room on the top end of the shot. Another trick I use is a ND filter to drop the f-stop down while keeping the shutter speed low. You might want to try that next time as well.:)

ah, see i cut off the top cause i didn't want a lot on the top and wanted it more on the bottom and side. but i see where your coming from. i have been meaning to get a ND but i have gotten around to it. I did shoot in manual, av, tv, all day, kinda went between all of em as i was experiment.
