We have just returned from a holiday in Sicily and whilst we were there we visited Vendicari which is Europe's southernmost marshland, a protected reserve covering a pretty lage area area. There are some old structures in the area, such as a late-medieval watch tower and ancient Greek and Roman archaeological sites, but since 1984 building has been prohibited on the private property bordering the preserve.

I did not have a tripod with me as this was not planned trip but there were a couple of birds that it would be great to get an ID on.

This fellow was busy fishing at about the limit of my 100 - 400 so these are cropped to death.

This little fellow was all of 2 inched long and was only there for a few seconds, He forgot that at posing school they taught him to keep his beak on the camera side of the stem.

These wetlands are used by migrating flamingo and must look stunning when full, they look pretty good when empty too.

Looks like a great place.....the egret I believe is called a "little egret" in Europe, here it's called a snowy egret. I have no idea what that 2nd guy is, I would think it's some kind of sparrow.
