So, I'm tired of the rinky dinky Canon hoods and their annoying-ness. I was looking at either http://www.bhphotovideo.com …tails&Q=&sku=11142&is=REG (external link) or http://www.bhphotovideo.com …w_In_Metal_Telephoto.html (external link) for the 85/1.8. Would the longer on vignette at 85mm or which one would be best. I'm going to get one for the 135L as well probably while I'm at it (http://www.bhphotovideo.com …w_In_Metal_Telephoto.html (external link) )

Wow, I am a HUGE B+W fan and I didnt even know they made lens hoods! Those sure are some fancy hoods too! That being said I am very much a strong advocate for only using the manufacturers specifically engineered hood for each lens. Canon is the only company that knows the insides and outs of their lenses and each and every hood is engineered to handle the vulnerable spots of the specific lens. My advice is to stick with the Canon ones. I must add too, I have never found them to be poorly built or annoying... IMO having to rotate a metal screw on hood oh lets say ten times to screw it on and off would be WAY more annoying!

What's annoying and rinky-dink about the original hoods? They couldn't be any more simpler to use, IMO.

The ET-65 hood for the 85 1.8 can be pretty frustrating because of the way it mounts, or easily "un-mounts". It can pop off unexpectedly sometimes.

That longer B&W hood might be too long for the 85mm 1.8 on a full frame. or more correctly, it may be too narrow. The only way to know for sure is to try it out. The ET-65 is deeper and wider. I just measured mine and it is about 85mm wide at the open end. So even though it is much longer, it doesn't vignette because it is much larger in diameter.

This is how they would look side by side.

I never understood the appeal of metal lens hood. Wouldn't you want the hood to be flexible enough to absorb the impact of a bumped or dropped lens? The front of a car is designed to crumple in a crash, shouldn't the lens hood do the same?

I wouldn't. They're screw-in, slow to fit/remove and have to be removed to fit the lens cap or filter, can't be reversed for storage. If you have a petal hood, that is a more optimal shape - it's rectangular when looked at from the lens position.
