I am heading out to the All Harley Drags this weekend. I am going to rent a lens to take to the event. I will be sitting in the stands so I was looking into the Canon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS. Will be shooting during the day and was thinking the extra zoom over the 70-200 would be nice for down track shots.

I am still using the old 20D with my primes (28,85,135) and kit lens.

If you have used this lens or have feedback on it I would like to hear it. Need to place my order so I can get this lens here before I leave.

Thanks!

If you're sitting in the stands, the 100-400 might be a better choice.

If you really think you'll need the wide end of the 28-300, you can always bring your 28/2.8 along for those shots along with the 100-400.

I see your point and that fact that I have a wide lens in the bag escaped me when I was looking at all the choices on the rental site. Thanks for clearing the fog! ;)

I went with the 100-400 as well as the 24-105 f/4L IS. Been thinking about buying the 24-105 for a couple weeks now so might as well check it out while I am renting.

Will this race be daylight or after dark under the lights? Will the lights be bright? How far away from the track are the stands? If it was me, I'd go for a 70-200 f/2.8. I wouldn't worry about down track. But all this will depend heavily on your particular situation. Not all tracks are alike.

The majority of it will be during the day. I thought about the 70-200 but I wanted the extra reach. I got the 100-400 and the 24-105 today. Played with both some and I think they will work for what I am doing. Won't be sure until I get out there.

That last shot is what I am looking for. That is why I wanted the extra reach over the 70-200. Trying to get in there tight. I'll see how it goes when I get there.
