Posted this in the family photo sharing section, but thought I'd post it here for the software side of things. I used MacOSaiX (external link) free software to do the mosaic. I believe there's free Windows software like AndreaMosaic (external link), but haven't used it.

For our anniversary I made this mosaic of all of our wedding and honeymoon photos. I've had the idea for a while, but only recently discovered how to achieve it. About 2200 photos in all. Full image is some 12,500px wide.

The photos used to make the mosaic had already been reduced to 240px IIRC because they don't need to be that big. In fact, the wedding photos are only the proofs we got from the wedding photog, certainly not of a quality that you'd normally be able to print.

Even the base photo was one of the proofs. I cloned out the watermark and enlarged it. The actual quality reduction from the enlarging doesn't really have an impact obviously.

BTW - if there's concern about me using proofs, removing watermarks etc, we have paid the photographer for the full set of full sized images for our own use, it's just that she's still processing them at the moment.

I've also included the original base image and some crops to show more detail in the panels.

That is so cool! I'm currently looking into a program that does that. Do you really have to be on flicker or google images for MacOSaiX? That seems like a lot of uploading.

the OP was using software that is available for the Mac. If you are using Windows it would be another app. I don't believe it had anything to do with Flickr or Google -- it's something you would do on your computer then you can upload the finished image to a Web host.

Tony is correct. The images used to make the mosaic were all on my computer, not on the web. I wouldn't recommend using images hosted on the web, it would be very slow to create the mosaic. It's pretty processor intensive and would like to add in downloading images to the time it takes.
