cfcRebel. I am not flaming here. Honest. Your disgust over another having the "same as you" is like someone seeing a Toyota Echo on the road and saying they are driving your car. Your avatar is quite possibly one of the most used online. One of my bike forums has over 10 users with it alone. I will never accuse anyone of being an internet rookie becasue I'm sure not L33t enough I'm sure.

I say move on and work on having your own avatar. My avatar is of me dragging a body part on the ground at 135 kph. I'm sure you can find one that is just as exclusive to yourself. Pick one that reflects you. Make one that others copy and you feel pride in it knowing YOU are the author.

Turn the frown upside down is what your kindergarten teacher would say. Use it as a springboard for having your own online identity.

Hoho, if i were as good as the original author of my avatar picture, trust me, i'll definitely take my own photo and use it as avatar. But unfortunately i am not as pro as the author. Heck, i just started serious photography less than a year ago. Don't get me wrong, if i could, i want to be like pro in 6 months but i understand it takes longer than that for average Joe like me to really become a good photographer.

I don't know about others, but when i uploaded that picture as my avatar, purpose is to remind me everytime i login here that i want to be as good as the photog behind that pic one day. As simple as that.

Maybe a rule around here should be if you did'nt take or make it you can't have it as an Avatar?

My first one was related to my other hobby. I have since dropped it on all forums I visit in favour of my own shots even though it was distinctive.

I think that this thread brings up a good point about avatar's. Since this is a photography fourm, it should be against the rules to an avatar than anyone has taken. We are all photographers here and we all must have aleast one good photo that we have all taken.

And if you wonted to you could always use a selfpic since there is only one of you in the world, no one would wont to steal that :)

Well, I didn't take the picture in my avatar, but it's on my drivers license and passport, so since I show the image to anyone asking me to see my license or passport, I thought it'd be ok to show it here.

Please clarify. This doesn't make any sense.

I think he's saying don't use avatars you didn't take yourself. That would presumably make Petra's one illegal? Probably better to say don't use Avatars you don't own copyright on... (still working on mine! I've one I can't get small enough to post - grrrr)

Yea something like that. I could make some kind of excuse that I was at work and I knew the boss was looking over my shoulder, or it was kiwi English, but no. Despite only knowing one language, some time’s it's hard to for me to find the right words and type it out.

ohh well

I don't think there should be any rules for avatars except for size rules and respect copyright.

But I do think since this is a photography forum that a recommendation could be that if the avatar is a photo then it would be best if it was one shot by the poster self or in some way related to the poster.
