Took this pic the first day I received this lens. It is cropped substantially.

Hey DC Fan,

How is your keeper rate with this lens? Went through this thread and saw a lot of your pics (great, btw) and I'll be using this lens for action/sports as well. I've heard the lens has trouble tracking in AI Servo and AF can be a little slow at times, so just wanted to know your opinion. And I think I saw you shoot with a 60D (?), which is perfect because I do as well. I'm still very much on the fence with about this lens, but I most definitely don't want to cough up money for an L because I'm only a beginner...

Thanks!

I just bought a monopod which helped me grab some shots of these goldfinches at my local community garden.

You can get this lens on amazon for 349$ with 100$ mail in rebate, seems like a good bang for the buck

No trouble from the Tamron lens with focus tracking or with AI Servo from actual use at actual events with moving subjects, even when the subjects were approaching the camera position. The main challenge in using the 60D and the Tamron lens at these events is to make sure the camera is pointed in the correct direction and the shutter button is pushed when the peak action happens.

Thanks for the response! Think I'm gonna go for this lens when funds are available. There's a surf competition and Dallas Cowboys scrimmage coming up next month so hopefully I'll have it by then. Can't wait!

I have this lens and absolutely think its worth every single buck. I'll also share some pictures cause they say more than words.
All these shots are taken without tri/monopod, just out of free hand and mostly at or close to the 300mm focal lenght.

I read some treads on this forum where some guy was saying that this lens was pretty much worthless from 200mm onwards. Well these photos clearly prove it wrong IMO.

Photo 1, 3, and 6 is even cropped past the 300mm...

Wow these photos show the kind of detail I was interested in, it does not seem sofr at 300mm, were any shot wide open? Previous posts also show that this lens is perfectly capable for fast moving action too. I have been torn between this lens and the canon 70-200 F4 non-IS in my budget but this lens would provide the VC and extra range. How do you find the AF in lower light? what about contrast? have you done much sharpening in PP? how does it deal with out of focus hightlights? I have seen quite a few samples with pronounced halo's.

The 3#, 5#, 7#, photos were all shot wide open.
I was in the same boat, I did lots of research about the exact same lenses. In the end I couldn't afford the 700$ for the 70-200 f/4 non-IS and went for the Tammy. Glad I did...
The VC is incredible helpful.
Unfortunately I don't have any experience with any L lenses. So I can't compare anything.
Focus is slow. Flash with auto-focus beam really helps in very low light. Contrast is very good IMO. Haven't noticed any problems with OOF highlights.
I don't do much PP, I don't have Photoshop. Just use Picasa for a little sharpening etc.
I have had the Canon EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM. The Tammy is far, far better and VC really, really helps.
If you get the lens I am sure you won't regret it. I didn't. I can't speak for the L lens. I am sure its good though... The tammy is just a little better:D
