Unfortunately Amazon uses numerous sellers under its banner and it is a tossup whom it will feature at any given time. So one supplier packs great and another crappy. One sells at the featured price, several others sell for more or less. You have to search around Amazon pages to find the best deals some times and the more reputable sellers.

Anyone else have an occasional squeeky focus?

I would just send it in since it is under warranty. Why wait for it to fail?

Took some shots last night and about 20 minutes into it, I got an E1 error "communication between lens and camera". Shut it off an turned in on and all is ok. I'll shoot more this weekend to see if it happens again. Anyone else see this? Mine is new, SN 24XXX.

I would clean the contacts on the camera and ensure the battery is good. Then go out and shoot some more. If it persists send it back for an exchange.

Nope, if it sounds bad just send it in for a new one.

I own mine since christmas and have not experienced any error with the lens and camera. clean the contact of the camera like the other guy said above.

Googled Canon e01 errors and found some interesting stuff.
1) some people experience this with outdoor and indoor shots.
2) possible reason is 3rd party companies like Tamron and Sigma don't have the exact focusing algorithm. The reverse engineer it and take a best guess. Makes sense that this would be proprietary. Older lens and newer bodies see this often.
3) battery life could be a trigger also.
4) Contact surface is also possibility.

I like 3rd party HW because often you get more for less. I am going to shoot a lot of pictures this weekend and put this lens through the ringer. This lens cost me less than half of a Canon USM IS EF so this is kinda deflating me a little.

Well Im not too confident with this particular lens. I took over 100 images and found them consistently lacking in detail and very difficult to find the sharply in focus areas. It may just be this copy as I see lots of fine images in this thread, but so far I find my 55-250 IS out performs this lens in detail through out the images. Now not all of them were bad, but I would say that only about 10 percent would be what I would define as keepers. I can dramatically increase that with lots of work in post processing but you know that is the reason I wanted this lens, was to do less PP.
