can folks with this lens please tell me how it performs (honestly) in AI Servo tracking moving wildlife, etc?

please mention your camera body so I am aware of its AF system paired with this lens.

Thanks!

I'm looking at this or the 70-200 F4 Canon? I have a 40D. What do you guys think?

seems to me the 40D burst rate and AF system is built for AI servo action, so I would suggest the 70-300 something, unless you liek stills, then you don't need the IS for the 70-200...

Is it me, or do some of the shots in here seem soft? Don't get me wrong, there are some sharp and great shots, but it seems an inconsistent thread?

Sigh. Just like most every lens sample thread on here yes?

Yep. Depends on a lot of things, one of which being the often-used combination of 1/80 of a second at 300mm at 5.6, which is about as worst case as you can get. There's also the difference in sharpness caused by different post-processing capabilities, as well as sample variation between lenses.

See my sig -- jpegs tell you almost nothing.
