I don't know about 7D, but with 50D AF'ing @ 420mm with max aperture of f/8 is a big pain, I just turn on 10x live view and use MF on the rare occasions when I do use the lens with a TC.
Ditto ! ...... that method gives the best results for me.

You may have to work with Tamron service to get it fine tuned or you could get an awesome issue....it seems to be luck of the draw though. Currently, Tamron has my lens and 60D trying to resolve the soft-focus issue. They just received it today (7/15/11) I'm sure it will be a few days before I hear back from them. ---------------
