In fields as competitive as automobiles and photography, there can be few absolutes. But if you ask a pro photog or a camera buff who makes the best equipment, you're likely to hear the name Hasselblad. Ask the same of an automotive enthusiast and Ferrari stands more than a decent chance of being your answer. The two have undoubtedly met thousands of times before as Maranello's finest road and race cars have appeared through Hasselblad viewfinders, but now the Italian automaker and Swedish photography outfitters are teaming up in a different way.

The special edition Hasselblad H4D camera you see above is pimped out in Rosso Fuoco – a shade of red considerably more subdued than Rosso Corso or Rosso Scuderia but no less Ferrari – with a Prancing Horse shield to match and a special glass-topped compartmentalized case. Only 499 examples will be produced, following the classic Maranello formula of one less than they think they can sell. No word on pricing, but considering that an "ordinary" Hasselblad H4D fetches in the neighborhood of $20,000, we're hesitant to ask. Details in the press release after the jump, with further details to be announced later this month.

I honestly can't imagine a real pro wanting a red ferrari camera to take to jobs.

There's been a rash of these "limited editions" being announced lately by boutique camera makers. All of them trivialize their respective makers in my opinion. But with the technology divide long since been eliminated, what else is there to do to add a little pizazz to the brand name of these upper end camera producers?

Or is this just nothing more than a simple cash grab with no other valid commentary on the state of the market?

If I were buying one I certainly wouldn't go for the red version with the "look at me I'm a clown" shield on it.

That said, if I covered a lot of Ferrari events, maybe.

It will be funny if they end up selling for less than the standard model due to demand issues.

Its a collectors item. Leica has produce's similar items in the past as has hasselblad. I shot with 500C/Ms for years and there is absolutely nothing like a blad. And now that there are square digital backs being produced and more and better ones in the works well I wish I would have hung on to at least one of my 500 C/Ms.

Just passed on a 501CM or so with a Phase One P20+ back and a Zeiss 80mm T* for $4500. It looked like a killer imaging rig.

Good gear will always hold value.

I refuse to buy into the H series as while it is likely a cadillac in every way the V series draws me near simply from the sheer volume of gorgeous images that have been produced with this camera. That and the fact that the glass is excellent and the format intriguing! I have always shot rectangle and yet to shoot square. I am in short order to run a roll of PanF through one of these cameras just for the sheer glory of viewing the negs.

I loved my 500C/Ms. The 180 sonar CF is just AMAZING glass. Man I really wish I would have kept a 500 C/M and 50mm FLE CF, 80mm C/F and 180 CF lenses and a couple of film backs and an eye level finder. :(

Found this on the web. Check this bokeh

What a "choice" piece of gear. These are fun and creative selling days we live in. The white Pentax cams attract my eye as well.
