Now, back to the picture. I'm not a fan of selective color, but it works here. The tattered flag makes the shot. I would have liked to have seen more of the tombstone, though.

I think it's perfect. I grew up in Michigan with my grandparents confederate flag in the back yard. They were from Georgia, and southern pride was a big deal to them. (something I still don't really understand to this day. I suppose it's like fans of a sports team.) It's not about racism, they were the nicest people to everyone.

The back of the tombstone or a wider shot? This one is cropped from the original. I also had another with the flag completely covering the grave but that one didn't seem to work as well. I'm convinced that one day I will post a pic in the critique forum that will garner more critique.. today may not be that day though

Dang! I missed them.

For me, I think it would tell a better story if it was a shot of the front of the headstone. There's some kind of round shadow on the flag that distracts my eye. Somebody's head?

I find it extraordinarily odd and missing what is important to not be able to discuss the meaning of a photo in the critique section of a photo sharing forum. It seems to me that that far outweighs the significance of whether or not there is chromatic aberration in the corners. This comment might well be removed, but it needs to be said, particularly because it may be the reason some will be reticent to comment on those qualities of the image that Meaning dramatically overshadows.

Forum rules are quite clear. We do not allow political or religious discussions/comments.

If you have a problem with the forum rules you need to address them via private message to any moderator or admin.

Actually the picture was more of a statement about racism than being racist. But I still agree it was off-topic.

Your title and the image are actually contradictory to me. I see the flag and the tombstone symbolic of the death of the confederacy. I suppose the color could be seen as rebirth, but the feeling of death and loss are immediately what come to mind for me.

Yeah yeah, nice pictures. The full black and whites are cool I like the contrast. I just put the kkk link up as a joke. Glad 4 or 5 people got it but I did obscure the topic and I apologize. I'm a fan of andres Serrano's work. I particularly like his religious work.

I like what you did in #2. Nice. In #1, I wonder what the shot might have looked like if you had included much more of the surroundings, with that lone flag there. The color element in a b&w image is starting to be a bit overused.

I agree that it's overused but I had never done it before and seemed appropriate on this one. The B&W version didn't work at all. This was the original with abit more of the surroundings before cropped:
