OK, if anyone wants to test this with one of my images, here's a lens vignette test image I did:

http://www.pbase.com/image/123436482 (external link)

Now, when you fully view the image, make sure the viewing size listed below the image/exif info is set to Original, then you can do the right-click Save Picture As, give it a name (keep it as a jpeg) and save it to wherever -- it should be 120-130 KB. Then, you can rename it with a .txt extension, open it in a text editor and do the seach for "camera-raw-settings", say, then if you scroll down the text file you should after a number of lines see a whole lot of entries tagged with the "crs:" tag. Note that not just my adjustments are entered (which weren't many for this shot), but that every adjustment parameter for Lightroom/ACR is entered, in this case most with a "0".

See how much fun we can have:)?

Tony, if you're working with JPEGs that data will all be inside the file, I think I misunderstood you there. The sidecar files are only when dealing with RAWs, as those files don't get modified by the software, but yes, as you saw, anything in the metadata is right there in the JPEG. If you really want to see more detail, look at it with a HEX editor and see what you find in there... You'll see a whole stream of standardized locations that will be very consistent, and you can easily pull out whatever info's there. Might have to do some math, but it's all there! ;)

Ah yes, you did misunderstand what I was saying! I'm very familiar with xmp sidecars, I just don't use them in Lightroom unless I want to "pass a file on" to Bridge, so very few of my folders have xmps, and of course none of my jpeg export folder.

And, yeah, like you say, there is a lot of stuff in the metadata -- Bridge/Photoshop do a pretty good job of showing a bunch in the Advanced section of the Info/Metadata reader.

I think we should all try to leave it if possible. I find it helpful for many reasons.......not just the dude who posts "This is my 4th 7D to return, all my pictures are OOF"
