Thoughts on Post Processing

The island is too central (for me) needs to go left a bit.. overall pic is too dark (for me). Like the water and reflection.

I get halos in most shots like that, thought was a feature? of digital photography. Seen a similar, pic of the island in Waiwera taken in bright light, blown up large on canvas with the same halo.

Something to do with back lighting and digital?

The beach shot again .... better

It is much brighter.
I know what you mean. It is a nice picture, but not yet something I would hang on my wall.

Part of this years goals is to have photos that could hang on a wall.
My photos are missing the "x" factor, every now and then I get 1 but not often and I need to work out why.

In part its composition + scenes + PP

subject, lighting, composition, processing, photographer, equipment. (in that order I'd say)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

A good goal to have. Obviously if you can get it right in the camera you are best off. Though it disturbs / amazes me how much magic can and is performed in post processing. There are some geniuses that can turn coal into diamonds.... but that isn't one of my goals to be one of them. Personally I just love taking photos. I don't know why. Sometimes I can't help it. I often stop myself by asking myself what the photo will be good for, or will it be something I will be able to show others and be proud of. Of course there are the snap shots that photographically are nothing, but for the family album they have to be taken... But back to what I was saying. I love taking the photos, but the sitting on front of the computer and sorting, tweaking, Polishing, transforming images is a task I don't really enjoy. But it is necessary!

Lighting, composition, subject, processing, equipment. All adds up to photographer.

This is what I have replaced the 5D with. Fishing and fun times with the family. :)

Once the rest of my gear sells I should have enough left over for a Panasonic  GF3 with that tiny little 14-42 powerzoom or maybe a GX1. Or I may wait for the Canon GX1. (Could they get any more confusing with the camera names?)

Thoughts on Post Processing

Both are under-exposed, second lacks contrast but the halo is reduced which is good.

See the histogram? the end sliders should be brought in to the red marks, and maybe slightly further depending on how harsh you want to go with the contrast.

Where do you put the CF card in that?

Looks like a fun boat. Small enough to be easy to launch etc, large enough to be safe.

My criteria were: Small and light enough to be able to launch and handle by myself, and be towed by Kerry-Sue's car. Also had to fit in the space in front of the car port. Big enough for me and 2 kids to safely go for a blat and a spot of fishing at some of the close in spots, and with enough grunt to tow a biscuit or wakeboard. (it's got a 25HP yamaha on the back, which is more than enough). Not to old (2008) and the price was right.

Sounds ideal.
When I was a kid, I learnt to water-ski behind our boat with an 18HP Johnson motor. Ok the boat had a pretty flat bottom, but it was possible. We had loads of family fun with that before upgrading to this (external link).

Naaa.. Just joking

Was more like this (external link).. with a 75 HP motor

Scott think of the photos we could take with a boat

Aaron ... note to self check histogram during PP.

Peter ... I cant pre visualise so PP is my creative side turning a photo into something, well learning to without going over the top.

Rob & Duncan ... cant always get those on every trip esp light.

Always thought I needed a mentor. Looks you guys are it ;)
