Well, that's 3 1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back. Don't think I want to be a printer/copier technician. Esp. when you haven't got a manual.

My multifunction laser printer broke and I eventually traced to a broken shaft on a cog. However, the thing needs to be near fully dissembled to get at it and many many trial & error attempts to have all the cogs & gears lined up as they were supposed to be :(

All that time & effort due to the failure of a $3.34 + GST plastic part grrrrrrrrr

wouldn't it easer to pay someone else to replace the part?

I didn't even know if the thing was repairable. It probably is still serviceable by an HP agent but they would be horrendously expensive, they would have to do it on site as its a heavy SOB.

I've had the thing for 8 years, its a business version nominally rated at 30 000 pages a month, I've done 29 749 pages in total!

If I couldn't get it to work I was going to dump it. It's not the quickest, certainly not the quietest or smallest thing around. Complete set of toners (4) and imaging drum are around $1000.00 and good for 5000 pages.

But, now that it's back in the land of living, I'll keep it. Kids use the printer & copier for school stuff, I occasionally print some business stuff and use the fax.

I'm qualified to repair those. Well, I was 10 years ago.

that thing would be 10 years old wouldn't it.

I would have thought with the time and effort in getting the part and then fixing it, would have paid to just get a new one :)

I'm not sure how much a modern equivalent would be, but it was only my time after work and a cheap part. Pleased it's going though, good to have a win from time to time!

good result Mark - love seeing folks repair stuff rather than bin it & buy another one. What model is it? I'll ask our printer guy for a service manual...

Its the HP Colour LaserJet 2840 (more commonly known as a ship anchor).

I can understand why it happens though. Replacement can often be cheaper than repair.

However, despite the unusual breakage of the shaft, the machine has years of life left in it. It's only done the equivalent of 1 months design usage!

I would think before it even gets to its 1st scheduled service (150000 pages), at the rate I use it, the consumables would have well & truly stopped being produced.

Sad news today. Kirstine Bestic (IKirst) has passed away.

iKirst - your banter and fun was a great entertainment to lots of people and your photos and images bought a smile. You will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. The world is a poorer place today. RIP

Condolences to all her family and friends x
