A video card is only useful if:
The software he will be using can access a GPU
The card is supported by the software.

No good getting an AMD card if your going to use Premier Pro for example, and no need for a card at all if you're going to use Windows Movie maker.

So long and thanks for all the flash

the specs of the gopro software support OpenGL so to me a video card would help with taking the load off the CPU and on to the GPU.

SSD is only going to help boot times and app loading times, while it's encoding disk access isn't going to be that much of bottleneck.

that's the way I see it.

I wouldn't have a computer without an SSD these days. Boot speed is not that important to me, but it just makes everything more snappy. A small SSD is pretty cheap, $100 maybe, you can get by with 60GB pretty easy, and 120GB very easily.

The video editing software is
GoPro Studio And Corel Video Studio pro.

I have gone without the SSD and Graphics card at the moment.
Remember, this is a computer for my youngest son who is turning 14.
We'll see how it goes, and as said, can add components when and where we need them.

I upgraded the motherboard to one with the H97 chipset.
As a compromise for no SSD, we have the Hybrid disk, with built in SSD, which will help things a little.

I threw the 256GB SSD in my computer recently, and it makes such a HUGE difference... Really worth the money and time spent on it. It was also surprisingly easy to install.

Video encoding using cuda or Intel's quick sync etc is only worth using for dirty mobile transcodes etc.

For anything worthwhile your down to CPU grunt. Io doesn't have a lot to do with UT.

But I second add an ssd, all round benefits.

H97 chipset means you probably running a CPU with Intel quick sync...

CPU is the i5-4460
Seemed like a good bang for the buck.
Parts all arrived on Saturday, so I put it together on Sunday.
Now I just need windows. Hopefully will arrive today version 8.0.
Just not looking forward to downloading over 3GB 8.1 update. With my internet speed that can take days.

you should be able to get an OEM version of 8.1 since your buying hardware

Bit of a road trip today ....... haven't been to Raglan in 25 yrs. First time visit to Bridal Veil Falls.
Great roads to give the car a bit of a run as well :) Wife didn't yell at me once ..... must be getting used to me driving it.

Light was to strong for the falls. Manu bay was cold but "bone yard" brought back memories of nearly drowning there. Surfed Raglan one, never went back.

That's nice Tony - I have never had much luck at Bridal Veil Falls because always such hard contrast down there. Did you have to boost the shadows?

.......Mark V all good?

Yep, I'm fine. Having a bit of a hard time tracking the guy down to get his insurance details.... may have to get the daughter on the case....

Have a good look at it in the daylight (had a couple of night shifts afterwards). Damage is not as bad as it possibly could have been and it was driveable, just. I took it very slowly on the way home afterwards, about 20km/hr with hazzard lights on.... Was a bit tricky turning into the driveway and into my park..... I wonder why????

I don't know really.

I'm fairly confident that it is just the tie rod ends of the steering rack but it may be a entire new rack. A little bit of damage to the front, grill, couple of lights, had a lightweight nudge bar on the front which is wrecked but I wouldn't get them to replace that anyway.

However, on the drivers side, where I got shunted up over the kerb and into the barrier, both wheels & rims will have to be replaced.

I don't believe that there is anything structural though but can't really tell until it goes on an alignment machine. I'm fairly confident the the transmission/diffs/half-shafts are ok.

So, could be 2 to 4K or it could be write-off.
