That's nice Tony - I have never had much luck at Bridal Veil Falls because always such hard contrast down there. Did you have to boost the shadows?

Had to .... overcast day or early morning late afternoon be best. Least there was some water :)

you should be able to get an OEM version of 8.1 since your buying hardware

OEM is usually available with either a CPU or Motherboard

I got an OEM 8.0 over e-bay. and upgraded to 8.1.
Spent many hours installing and upgrading software last night. Started at about 09:00pm, with windows install, Office, + a few other pieces of software. Started the 8.1 upgrade last night/this morning at 00:30. It finished at 08:00. I dream of a faster internet. Now to do the fine tuning installing drivers, e-mail etc. Booah.. takes time

I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 on two, a laptop and the HP all in one desktop. The HP took a couple of hours, the laptop a couple of days. Same internet server.

...Canon NZ has NOT had a very good day the last couple of days:

You need to be very careful when you choose to sponsor an event/prize to not choose one that is potentially controversial. I doubt they will sponsor the blogger of the year award next year!

I just had this discussion with the guys at Auckland Camera around my new 70-200, why would I want to put another piece of glass in front of my flash expensive optics and degrade the image? The hood provides some protection and I didn't use a filter on my old 70-200 and I was rewarded with a few minor marks on the front element. Given replacing the front element if damaged is over $1000 estimated I figured a good quality filter was the way to go as probably unlikely to see a drop in IQ.

Then again maybe there is something unusual about the old white trombone?

But, I bet the filter does more to lower the image quality than a few marks on the front element would.

So long and thanks for all the flash

Probably right.

The hood on that lens has done more to save my old 70-200 than any filter would though.

Yip, the hoods have saved my lenses several times.

I used filters once, then learned just how tough a front lens element is. Essentially anything that would damage it, would smash any filter in front of it first, then go onto to damage the lens.

As protection for your lens they are a total waste of money.

I use a filter on my 17-40 f4, with out it the lens is wide open to dust. While it wouldn't keep all dust out its still better than nothing.

I see on petapixel that hoya has created an antistatic filter to keep dust away. Hmm sounds more like a gimmick than anything.
