In the 7 years I've been shooting as a professional, not being particularly careful with my equipment, I've never scratched a front lens element. This includes the time I accidentally rolled a camera and lens down a small hill, and the time a camera and lens fell off the roof of my car.

Though if anyone wants to buy a filter I have some good brand that fits the 70-200 somewhere. B&W I think, a great brand.

I had a camera knocked over on its tripod last year, onto hard concrete.
Wrote off everything but the front element :D

So long and thanks for all the flash

If your worried about dust, you would have a heart attack watching me work :lol:

What is it you do again, are u pro or something.

I have dropped the 17-40 a couple of times, from shoulder height on to concrete and both times the UV filter had taken the brunt of the damage. It was a bit hard to get off but apart from that all good and no damage to the front element.

I guess the gear is tougher than most people think they are

Me too.
The bulk of my photos are taken at dusty BMX race tracks.
I change lenses etc. Just do it as fast as possible to reduce the amount of dust that will get in the camera.

I stopped using filters except in extreme situations when I was doing some night photography with a middle priced UV filter on my lens. I noticed ghosting of the moon on the images. So I tried the same photo without the filter. The image was so dramatically better that It changed my opinion about filters.

Also I talked to a Canon rep once who informed me that the front elements are made tough, and also designed that they can relatively easily be changed if damaged without costing too much. the $1000 sounds to me like too much.

I managed to get some quite deep scratches on my 17-85 lens. No idea how. But you could not see them in any photos.

I used a 28-135mm on the 10D at the rally of Rotorua, being close to the cars it was really dusty, after the weekend had past the manual focus ring wouldn't focus any more. I had to send it in for repair. But it wasn't a L lens for sure.

Speaking of scratches..
I think I mentioned here that My eldest Tommy had problems that his quad apparently flicked a stone into someones door.
<RANT>
I am absolutely speechless and couldn't sleep last night.
We have been fighting with all our insurance companies who all say they won't pay.
Yesterday we got a rough estimate of what he wants to repair the stone chip in his door.
€3,800.00 F..ing Euro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For a chip in his f..ing door.

€450 for a Damage estimate
€1,850.00 Actual repair
€364.00 Car rental
€30.00 Other costs
€1,000.00 Approx for his Lawer costs!!!!!!! He wrote 2 letters for f*cks sake!

That is NZD 5,900.00

Flashback:
Some time ago someone told me not to put a filter on the 100-400L, can they please tell me now why not?

It was likely me.

Even decent filters are not great compared to optical elements. This shows up much more on long lenses than wide.

I have seen some hideous results caused by filters on a 100-400 especially.

I cant understand how you would be responsible for stone chip damage, thats one of those **** happens things about being on the road.

Plus chip repairs are like $20

so what happens when you tell them to join the far queue? can they actually prove where the damage came from?

On the filter debate, I've always thought the images coming from my 16-35mm were better after dropping from eye-level onto concrete complete with camera & tripod. (removing the UV filter in the process)

I haven't used a UV filter on any lens since...

where?

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
