I cant understand how you would be responsible for stone chip damage, thats one of those **** happens things about being on the road.

Plus chip repairs are like $20

Problem is that when it happened he called the police and got them to document the damege (which I haven't seen). Organised a conviction against my 15 year old that he damaged his car and was driving an illegal vehicle without insurance (Even though it wasn't on a public road), and then immediately got a lawer involved.
Went to an Audi handler who insist that the whole door / side of the car has to be re-painted.
I am scared that if we don't pay that it will go from Bad to worse, as our legal insurance refuses to accept any costs if we go legal and loose it, the costs could go through the roof.

Hey everyone, thanks for your comments and links, they certainly give food for thought... several 77mm uv filters for sale, any takers? ;)

So having read all that why does Canon insist that the weather seal is not complete until a filter is fitted?

In bad old film days I mostly used the skylite 1a or 1b, sometimes a uv and later on the polariser.

Peter, am wondering if the lawyer has been called because the car is not insured where it was, and so he himself is also at fault? But, I am sad to hear of your problem.

so are you going to get the Nikon D810?

Nope, my D700's work just fine. I'm also taking a break from photography this year, after 7 years as a pro and getting married not that long ago I want a summer or two off.

Far enough. You could use the time for personal photography projects. Photograph what you like to photograph rather than having to photograph for your clients.

I have absolutely no desire to pick up a camera at the moment. Once you do something as a job it ceases to become a hobby IHMO. Plus I'm pretty practical, what do I want with random photos I take? I'll never look at them, and perhaps 2 images ever will be printed and put on the wall. I like wedding photos as people value them, look at them, and they have a purpose.

I really only take photos on holiday these days.

Canon state this for some of the shorter L lenses.

I guess that's a compromise..

But doesn't apply to 70-200 or longer.. The 100-400 isn't weather sealed anyhow.

Been there, that was the main reason I stopped doing event coverage and portrait work, taken me a while to get back into things though!

Can't find commentary in the manuals of my two weather sealed lenses, just a comment around possibly need ending to replace the real seal from time to time.

Might be a requirement if older ones?

from 17-40mm User manual:
Since the front element of the lens moves when focusing (zooming), you need to attach a Canon PROTECT filter sold separately for adequate dust- and water-resistant performance. Without a filter, the lens is not dust or water-resistant.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I think it's just the 17-40, 16-35's 50L that need the filter

Not quite what I was attempting to say. There are places that a car can be and are not covered by insurance, a race track is one.

I take it your son was riding his quad off road, and the damaged car was off road also, so maybe his insurance will not cover it because of that. I notice you say in an earlier post all insurance companies are refusing to pay. So you need to know, why are they refusing?

Actually Tommy was off road on a gravel road next to a motorway access road. The car was driving onto the motorway about 6m from him.
So it is 100% insured.
